Hi folks.

Some of you might remember about a year ago I was here asking some questions about an 06 plate Ibiza 1.4 16v that I bought for my son's 20th.

When I bought it, it had been "serviced" (whatever that might mean in practice) by the (non-Seat) dealer I bought it from. It's just been back to them to pass it's 2nd MOT, but I wondered about servicing recommendations from the forum.

When bought it had about 27000 miles on it, now a year later it's got about 34500 miles on it. The MOT did pass, but with a note that the front discs would require changing at some point soon (quoted £245 BTW for discs and pads - good or bad?).

Question is, at that sort of mileage, do you reckon it's worth servicing every year rather than on miles? What would be the suggested service periods for minor and major services?

Anything in particular that needs attention, and anything that really needs the loving touch and attendant bill from a Seat dealer?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Chris

Discs and pad, Not a bad price to be honest but I wouldn't expect it to be quite that high.
I cant help you as far as servicing goes however as far as discs and pads go they should be relativly cheap especially if you look at Ebay.

Again I'm not sure of the Disc size (Unless you know) but you could probably pick up some very nice discs and standard pads from trade parts for a fraction of that.
I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to help further but those seem expensive for two discs and two pads!

Cheers Chris, I was a bit surprised, as I had an idea in my head that about £200 felt right. Completely unjustified, but that's where my head was at... :D

Still, last time I put front discs and pads on my (now sadly departed) car, it cost me a whopping £1100! :-o

I'd recommend you service it every 10k or 12 months, whichever comes first.

A 10k or 12 monthly service consisting of air, fuel, oil and pollen filters, along with spark plugs and oil is the norm. A timing belt (assuming it is belt driven and not a chain) should be changed every 60k or 4 years whichever comes first IMO. Brake discs and pads should just be done as often as the car needs them. :)

By having a 1.4, you should not be getting the timing chain issue that other 1.2 owners get, so that's one thing less to worry about.

As for discs and pads, if you have 256mm front discs (like my 1.2) then you can get a pair of good quality Pagid discs with an anti-corrosion coating for £40.78 from Euro Car Parts online. Add about another fiver each disc if you have the 288mm discs. A set of front pads are only £20-£27 depending on what model your car is (just provide ECP with the reg number, they'll work it out). So about £175 labour + parts... that quote is a bit on the expensive side.

Ah, top man! Thanks!

I did wonder if once a year might be sensible for oil/filters etc as it does tend to do quite a few short journeys for a few weeks between longer runs.

Good call on the timing belt, well worth replacing on age not miles, as you say.

I'd check the service book, but it's with the car a couple of hundred miles away from me, and I just know if I ask him to fish it out and look for me, I'll be waiting bloody ages for him to do it! :D

Right, I'll find somewhere to give it a service when he's next home from Uni then.

Thanks again.

Changing the AIR FILTER + FUEL FILTER + SPARKPLUGs every year is a bit excessive I'd say, more like AIR FILTER every other or so years, FUEL FILTER every 4,5 or 6 years and SPARKPLUGs every 3 or 4 years.

What on Earth makes you say that? There's a difference between "well maintained" and "excessive", and I don't think the above is the latter. ;)

To leave the filters longer is probably okay if you do really low mileage, but say the OP's situation changes and he does more miles... you could end up doing 20k between filter changes. There's no point. It's £30 worth of parts ONCE in a year, personally I'd rather change things like the air filter and let the engine breathe!

Spark plugs probably can last longer than a year or even two, but for people who aren't really mechanically minded, preventative maintenance can be the best form of cure.

i agree thats some major years on them filters, if your doing very low mileage i woulld atleast air filter oil filter and oil, as for the price of the brakes, ridiculous, do it yourself, you would not believe how easy it is,

I got my front discs and pads replaced for £155 all in on my 1.4 ibiza recently...£245 sounds a bit much to me!
