Got 54mpg in my fr tdi on long run. Normally get 49/50 but it's just had oil change. Would that make diff?

For V-power diesel Cetane is guaranteed 51 typically 53-55; The benefits of V-power are not derived from the cetane rating.

Thanks Rob/Craig Yes I had heard that re V-Power (ie that the Cetane Number is not typically high) which makes me think that the "benefits" are to clean the engine up & then give a good clean burn (GTL etc)................However this explains why I find BPU D Better performing than VPD.
However it sounds like I should give FuelSave a go (hoping that the Cetane rating is "typically 55-58)............once I've got rid of all the Tesco stuff from my tank.

So maybe the answer is if you want to clean your engine up use VPD then switch to SFS or VPD.

Would be interesting to see exactly which additives are in V-D, always found my Volvo V70 runs smoother and quieter on it rather than say Tesco diesel.

I've read that once above a cetane rating of 55 there is no additional performance or emissions improvement to be gained from a fuel in a diesel engine. Cetane number is to do with how quickly the fuel burns so you would think that a CN of 55+ would be where the fuel manufacturers would want to go.

Must just be a natural limitation in a diesel setup?
 
On that basis sounds like that SFS could be a good bet (Good Cetane Rating, offers cleaning and a bit lower in price that BPU D............especially if the Shell garage is close to a Supermarket Filling Station !).

I'm suffering from filling up with Tesco a few weeks back at the moment...........I found that it is like you say noisey, but it's lost it's umph when accelerating up hills (which I do to keep the turbo vanes clear) but in the past two weeks when accelerating up a steep hill I've had that lack of umph shortly afterwards it's gone into limp mode............expect it's overboost error or could it be the opposite that it can't extract the power from the fuel and therefore the demand on the turbo is increased ?

I can't see that just two weeks (3/4 tank) of Tesco has clogged up the Turbo Vanes movement.

(been running BPU D for years and in that time never had Limp mode)

seems interesting, do we have any results or issues with sfs diesel? or is it a good way to save a few quid over vpd?
 
Only time the Volvee had a tank of Tesco stuff was when the V-D was out of stock locally, needed fuel so just went for it. Car just felt flat and was more dieselly on tickover.

The 5-pot rumble is deffo better on the V-D! [B)]

SFS has only recently been introduced - anyone noticed better fuel consumption over a few tankfuls yet?

I have only used two tanks of SFS fuel but I am getting slightly better mpg the more I use it. Only had Altea for two weeks so had to measure differences. First tank of fuel, whatever the dealer filled it with was getting 43-44mpg, second was getting 46-48mpg and this morning got 50mpg. Normally use Shell anyway as its on my way to work and the cheapest in the area by some margin. Be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks as I drive with aircon and speed is a bit higher etc.
 
Hi all,

Almost through the first tankfull of Shell's fuel saver. I've got just under a quarter of a (vented) tank left which means it's probably got about 100 or so miles left till I have to fill up again.

This means the car'll have done about 700 miles on the vented tank. It's been mixed driving, a little urban, motorway and country/highland roads on a run to Oban. About 100 miles of that has been driven fast with the rest travelling at what the sign say.

I can't say for sure the fuels made any real difference 'cos there's too many variables but, my first use of it has co-incided with a mammoth range. My usual vented tankfull has given me up to 650 miles.

I'll continue to use this fuel in my car which is a 2001 110 toledo.

anyone got any experience of it ? I wonder if cleaning additives have been sacraficed in the Diesel version as the flyers only talks about Unleaded cleaning inlet valves & lubricating upper piston rings no specifics re Derv ?

Well what they are actually saying is you should get 2% better MPG, this no doubt would be based on the higher cetane number. So if you normally get 45 mpg, you should now get 45.9mpg. or if you get 50 mpg, you should now get 51mpg.

I understand that bit but what I'm wanting to know is the other benefits (The give specifics as to what the new fuel does for Petrol engines (ie Lubricate the Upper Piston rings & also clean the Inlet valves) but not what it does for diesel engines. I'm concerned that maybe the cleaning function of the Diesel version is not as good.

Ive been using SFS for the last couple of weeks in my pd140, mainly because its the cheapest in my area... I avoid using supermarket diesel at all costs as all my past pd110 have felt awful after filling up with (imho) their crap. MPG with SFS may be creeping up a wee bit!

I spend about £40 every week on fuel so notice a couple of pennys here and there!!

As far as both petrol and derv V-power and Ultimate are concerned I find they are a waste of the extra money MPG wise... but then they may help give a clean out! would explain the slight decrease in smoothness in my experience.

Any one else found this or just me being *squeak* tight! :)

it's all just marketing bullshit, if you normally use Shell anyway then in theory you're 'gaining' with a better fuel for no extra cost.
if you don't use Shell normally then they're trying to sway you.
you could save on MPG just by driving differently anyway..
leave 5 mins early & drive slower
don't accelerate so quickly
do 75 instead of 80 on Mway
etc etc

try it for a week or 2, you'll surprise yourself
my work C5 can vary from 550 to 600 miles per 65L which is hell of a lot more than what Shell are claiming i could save
 
Well I don't want to use it over a long period of time unless it cleans the engine, I'm affraid 1 litre in 50 doesn't sway me if I end up with a sooted up engine and so far Shell hasn't said any other benefits for Derv (unlike as I say they say re Unleaded)

I've tried to get something on this from Shell and nothing yet...............

Been using it since mid July after it came out and not noticed anymore mpg, I do 80miles per day over two journeys to work and back.
Cheapest by at least 1p in the area so will continue to use it, but doubt fuel economy will improve tbh. If anyone got one of the daily papers on Sat (think it was the Mirror) then they had £2 off 20+ litres of fuel from Shell.

Officially its 'save up to 1 litre per tank'

The usual caveat incorporated to cover all angles which in the real world means nothing.

Marketing crap on just another formula.

Incidentally I do use Shell more often than not for many years (20) as its the nearest garage and usually the cheapest locally too. Have never been a fan of supermarket fuels either (the cost issue).
 
Haha yeh I ended up buying a couple of mirror's on saturday for the vouchers!

Been using the FS stuff for a while now, I do a 150 mile motorway trip twice a week, pretty much at 70 on cruise control the whole way. Not noticed a big change at all to be honest, been getting 2-3 mpg more than normal but you can't really write home about such a small variation. Might just be because I cleaned out all the crap from my boot so I'm travelling a bit lighter :D
