Needed to put petrol in the motor to see if I could drive to work in the morning. Got her started, pulled off and no ABS steering. Totally gone. Got to petrol station, couldnt get the petrol cap off for about 10 minutes. Drove back home, parked up and the temperature went through the roof and the fans came on like a 747 was going to take off.

I expect major damage under the bonnet.

id say it was just frozen up? check the heaters were warm. could just be water is blocked up causing it to overheat and the water pump could be frozen up. has the power steering belt snapped?

its never dead just resting ;)

I felt the pipes and they were very hot. No idea if the steering belt has snapped. When I started her up earlier in the day it was whining like a banshee and a slight smell of smoke was coming from the car.

Prob burnt out and died

2 things, power steering pump could of seized up or broken causing the belt to burn against the crank pulley, and water could have leak somewhere.

Power steering or water pumps failed causing the aux belt to go.

One on the mazda's doing it at the mo, if you get a bit of ice on the belt pulleys it can be a real bitch until they warm up.

I would go with that aswell. Ive had a whine for ages, dry bearing whine and the -15 temps didnt help, then my power-steering pump broke the spindle and everything , made a proper job of it.

the aux belt drives the power steering pump so thatll explain why thats gone if its the belt, also drives the water pump so would explain why its over heated too ;)
Chances are your belts snapped, possibly been slipping hence the burning smell and just snapped
Be the first place id be looking anyway

halfords do them, thatll be your easiest bet mate...
not sure on part number tho, but they have those books to sieve through to find the right one...
go out and double check it is that tho first, and while youre there, see if you can spin the pulleys on all the parts the belt touches to make sure they spin freely.

Right, finally managed to have some daylight this morning to look at the car.

There is a a thin belt (about 1cm wide) which has come off the pulley. THis is below the bigger belt which site on the left hand side of the engine bay. I would presume this is the aux belt for ABS.

Didn't have time to look around the rest for the problems with overheating/water pump. Least I know half my problem.

Is this belt easy to fit back on or do I need someone who knows what they're doing to do it.

Sounds like the aux belt but I could be wrong, if it is, i have changed the aux belt on mine but I dunno what its like for a 2.0 :)

not my engine bay pic, stolen from cupragti16vs thread just now...

The big belt in the bottom left corner is not the one that has come off, there is one below this, level with the wheels as I can see the belt from the front wheel arch.

To stick that belt on you'll need to loosen off the power steering pump. To do this, at the bottom of the power steering pump are two nuts one ontop of the other. loosen the one thats on top now turn the other one so it moves the pulley closer to the other one. Once you've done this you should be able to slip the belt back on. Now tighten as the reverse of removal.
