As title says.

Clutch has been 'a little strange' for a few months. Started out with a bit of a judder now and again in low gears when first accellerating, but then that went away.

Since then, again every now and then (probably every other day) I can't get it back into gear - at the same time, the clutch pedal stays half depressed. If I just hook it back up by putting my foot under it, it goes back into gear no problems and I carry on my drive as normal.

ANYway - I probably should've got this checked out earlier and I might have killed my DMF. Basically it rattles around every few seconds at idle. There seems to be a bit of a wobble throughout the car at the same time as the rattle. Green Flag (whilst attending for a non-starting issue) told me it was the DMF :(

I've heard a couple of people recommend the SMF conversion. Would you? I'm looking at the Euro Car Parts conversion kit which includes a new SMF itself. Somebody I know with an account can get it for £125 plus VAT (50% discount I believe). Seems bloody cheap!

I plan on keeping the car for a few more years yet so I don't just want something to fill a gap. It needs to last. BEAR IN MIND IT'S BEEN RE-MAPPED TO 150BHP. Although I rarely boot it, if ever. It's only really on overtakes that I use the power. Most of the miles are just humdrum to and from work. I do about 12K a year.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated (prefer you to stick just to this topic though ;)

Cheers

Well I got the Transmech clutch kit but saw SO, SO many appalling reviews on a Google search I got the garage to find an alternative. Think it was a Valeo kit. £520 all in (paying cash so no VAT ;) ) which seems pretty good fitted for a conversion and new clutch. Will let you know what it's like when I get the car tomorrow.

You will feel a judder for sure if you up the power through bigger injectors and remapping. If you want to go for more power and you need a clutch or flywheel the n go for smf. If your 5 speed box then a 90 bhp tdi or engine code AHU flywheel will do the job.

Cheers.

Went for it in the end - replaced everything except slave and master cylinder, converting to SMF. I'm.amazed at the difference. Clutch is now unbelievably smooth. Pedal slick and provides same resistance all the way through movement. Changing down a gear I can barely even feel a bite! I'm now wondering why on earth they bothered with a dmf in the factory in the first place. £520 all in, including fitting, for a LUK kit with a year/10k warranty. Delighted. Hopefully my 150 BHP remap won't involveneeding to change the clutch for the rest of the car's life now I've gone for a decent one.

The difference you will notice is because of the new clutch and flywheel you have had fitted, not the fact its a SMF.

I had the DMF and Clutch changed on my old 407, and the difference was immense, apparently from what I understand, the reason that they put a DMF on is because they handle the torque better, so you get smoother acceleration and gear changes, downside is that they dont last as long, could be wrong on this one though lol.

Well the gear changes and accelleration has never been anything like this smooth and I've done 50k miles in the car! DMF are SUPPOSED to be smoother yeah but as my garage said today, they're forever converting dmf's to smf's on Transits because they handle payloads better and last longer.

my wifes 110 tdi have smf and i love it. i wish my 150 tdi had the same bite and feel of clutch
do it mate

The dmf is supposed to negate any judder on pick up/engagement of the pressure plate and the friction plate. But it's probably a ploy to get more servicing done at seat dealerships.

I noticed in my leon that when pulling off the line and wheelspinning when you lifted of the throttle and the wheels spun down the tyres would grip and the car would shoot forward. Not sure if this is particular to dmf or if it applies to smf as well. Just an observation.
