My lathe blew its motor so I got another unit but it has come with 6 wires and no instructions (chinese jobby from ebay) does any body know how it should be wired ?

I have searched online but got hopelessly confused :-(

Can you post some pictures of the rating plate etc? Single phase single speed will usually have just two wires, if you have 6 it is possibly a 3 phase motor and, as such, will not work on domestic single phase.

It's been a long time for me, but I think there will probably be a capacitor (or two) and two windings (Start and Run)? Did it come with a wiring diagram? or something similar on the rating plate?

No came with nothing , it seems on investigation that it was a complete unit pre wired with mains lead etc which somebody "bodged" and then sold on as new.

Yes its a single phase 6 wire motor with a "start" capacitor and a "run" capacitor , there are no diagrams or any other information on it unfortunately.

Will take some pictures over the weekend and post up.

Without a wiring diagram or photo of what you see be hard to be accurate I’m afraid.
I’d hazard a guess 4No. are your running wires, 2 for starter?
Could also be set up for High Voltage and Low Voltage. Wired as needed. My induction hob is capable of 3P and 1P dependant on used in UK or on the continent.
