Smell from engine bay

My mate has a leon fr tdi and we both went out last night for about 45 mins of very aggressive driving. When we got back popped the bonet and noticed a funny smell commming from the engine bay between the engine and the battery/airbox. Is this anything to worry about or is it just because the car was run hard. The engine was very hot and I burnt myself removing the engine cover

sounds like the clutch to me.

I dont think its the clutch because you cant smell it inside the car!

burning brake pads coming up into the engine bay? Mine stink when I've been giving it some beans.

But its comming from between the battery and the engine that gap!
