Check that the drain from the cooling matrix isn't blocked, causing condensation to build up in the airways.
The cooling matrix collects condensation as it cools the air (unless you are in a very dry climate) and this has to be let out. A tube leads from the bottom of the cooling chamber down to the bottom of the car, where the condensation is allowed to drip out onto the ground.
If you aren't getting drips of water under the car after a journey using the air cooling, then the drain tube could well be blocked

change the pollen filter mate, id do that first as they are a cheap and easy fix... the comma cleaner works okay.
if all else fails, go for a regas.. fairly expensive option aswell.

mine whiffs a bit too , mite change the pollen filter again (is this different to the one above the airbox )
might also try the comma stuff too , i dont recall seing water from beneath the car after a drive , not that i really look tbh

Good practise to run hot air through the system after using air con- stops the system festering over night.... and stops smell.... atleast that is my experience
great stuff guys ... i'll try them out and hopefully it works, weather is starting to get cooler so i won't be needing the A/C as much but still annoying to have to up with.... Cheers!
I tried Car Plan air con cleaner (I got it for £4 from ebay, Halfords sell it for £12 and Aldi sell it for £1.99! lol), worked a treat, 2months since using it and smell hasn't returned once yet. Highly recommended!

They are usually like smoke grenades that you set off in the car with all the windows and doors shut and the air-con on full recirc mode!
common problem in all air-conditioning not just cars, its fluff and particles that stick to the inside air-conditioning coil (behind the glove box in most VAG cars) bit like tumble dryer fluff, it gets wet with condensation when the ac is running and moulds, the smell goes away when the coil drys and comes back again when it gets wet.
In normal AC you would use a coil cleaning solution, a small high pressure spray and a paint brush to remove it, problem solved.
In cars its a little bit more difficult because getting to the coil to clean it is hard, comma works by killing the bacteria living in the fluff but doesn’t remove the fluff so it comes back sooner or later.
I’ve used comma on my cupra last summer, worked fine but the smell came back a few months later, now I carry an aerosol of detol anti bacterial surface spray (kills 99.9% of all bacteria don’t you know) and i periodically put the AC on recirculation and spray upwards from the passenger foot well (air onto the coil when in recirculation) for 10-15 secs.
Works for me, and working within air-conditioning sector for 10 years i know its what lazy engineers do to clean ( without getting their hands dirty) whole offices of indoor units!!

Yup, that's exactly how I did it. Leaves a lovely citrus smell too whenever I switch the aircon on

The best products to clean your evaporator coil is either easyclean which kills the bacteria n leaves a nice scent or condenside which is a bit more heavy duty which kills all but doesnt really leave a scent. Airco breeze is good to spray down the vents as that neutralises smells.
As for running the heating quickly before you turn your car off to dry the coil aint really the best idea as it can lead to smells being formed.
