Hello

I have a 2004 Cupra TDI 150bhp 78000

Just noticed thats its started to smoke pretty bad under 'normal acceleration' if i take it easy or accelerate hard is still smokes.

Its always smoked abit under accereration but now its pretty noticable.

If I drive normally say for a week then 'red line' it the first red line really kicks out the smoke and it leaves a smoke screen in the rear view mirror, it does get better after that but still smokes under normal driving.

Any ideas what could cause the smoke? how to fix it

The cars runs very smooth, temps MPG all spot on

Thanks lots

Spice

Remove and clean your egr valve

Very often misconcieved that the egr valve causes bad smoking, especially black smoke which is down to a poor air/fuel ratio which can be down to something as simple as a coolant or fuel temp sensor.

Check your boost pipes for leaks, run some premium fuel such as v-power or millars and take it for a hard blast to see if it clears, also have the fault codes read.

MJ. Where abouts are the pipes that should be checked for leaks?
My mpg is rubbish. Getting 32mpg around the town and went on a 4hr round trip last weekend and only managed 49mpg!

Hi irishman,

I live in Galway, from Kildare,

You drive a tdi so?

You get the smoke sorted? I'm dealing with blue smoke after a de-cat!![:@]

Havnt done anything to it but its not really that smokey anyway, I only see it the odd time depending on what way the sun is shining.
I changed the oil filter and oil n it a few weeks ago ant my MPG has went up a good bit.
Im from Antrim but moving to Derry in the middle of the week (so technically i'll be a Derry man when Kildare beat them on Saturday!)

Ah you're on the right track so.

Poeple talk about diesels like they are 'bomb proof' and low maintainance etc. ok so they don't need spark plugs! They need heater plugs!

But I have noticed that they do need constant maintenance - be it cleaning out the air pipes - this is hard to do without her up on a lift or at least on a ramp, or trying to keep the shite clear that builds up on the exhaust and intake system. yeah kildare are doing good enough, only coz of an Antrim man!! You know it!

Fixed that for you, Id like to claim McGeeney as one of ours but hes an orchard man!
I know what you mean about the ramp/lift. The jack doesnt lift the car up anywhere near high enough to get axle stands in at a good height. I found that out the hard way when I changed the oil. Its not easy taking the sump plug out when you have no leverage for the ratchet!

Oh rite, hmm well. I bought my TDI cupra in Armagh actually, far cleaner car than I'd have got down here.

True about the height, I spotted a few things when I had her up on a lift - they're so handy, I refuse to do any work under that car if it aint on a lift!

Did you try diesel additive to decrease the smoke?

Yip, I bought a twin pack of Carlube (injector cleaner and clean burn were the 2 bottles in it) and it helped and also made the car run a bit smoother

Nice one, an old trick down here is to but a drop of petrol and kerosene into a full tank of diesel - petrol is higher octane so it burns far more efficiently and lener so it burns all the residue away.

I even steal d odd drop of home heating oil - it does help, I clean out the pipes with it too.

and there's a huge 'PUFF' of blue smoke and then it does run a little cleaner. i suppose in my case it's just hte build up over the years and then the de-cat which makes her blow out harder bringing out the crap. I hope ta feck it clears up.

You running standard 150 brake?

Mate, it's happening to me!
I'm under the impression, from specialists, that it's because I have race injectors and a brand new uprated Garrett turbo, aswell as a de-cat exhaust system, plus other things (I'm no mechanic!)
However, I was having a "smoke-off" with a bus the other day!
It's only in the high gears when giving it the initial whap of throttle, like it's clearing the demon black seed out!
Tell you what though, back end of me car looks like a minors arsehole after 16 hour darn t'pit!

Ha sounds like a beast of a thing - they are a great engine for holding power. It's just so important ot keep the servicing done at proper intervlas.

It's just that it's blue smoke it's wrecking my head!

The de-cat hardly burst turbo seals? I have barely even driven it hard since de-cat.

Running at roughly 212 BHP, god knows what torque!
Servicing is done regularly, last done 800 miles ago, however, like you say, it's SO annoying, especially when u see people having a letch at it, as if your the Antichrist single handedly destroying the ozone layer!
Seen quite a few threads on this forum with people having similar problems!

a lot of smoke can be caused by the injector tips being a bit done as well. happened to a mate of mines with the same engine in a golf. if its the tips thought the engine starts to sound a little ticky as well.
