the story....

my ibiza fr went out of warrenty in september, when it was serviced and mot'd. 2 months later my head gasket blew. seat would offer me no finantial help even as it was so close to the warrentyand quoted me £780.
i said i would go elsewhere and got a quote of £450 +vat from a freinds dads garage so i had it done there
he told me it was advisable to get the cam belt replaced while he had the engin in bits to which i agreed.

he told me that oil had got into the water pump and he spoke to seat as he was having problems starting it and it needed a new variable valve timing unit( i think) which seat supplied at £300 +vat!

all in all it cost me with engine flush oil coolant ect ect £1400. as he is my mates dad hes not ripping me off but i feel i want to complane to seat as that shouldnt happen to a 3 year old car 2 months out of warrenty

he also said my front bushes are badly worn to the extent a pair of front tires have lasted me 6ooo miles and now bald! surly this should have been picked up on the last service 5000 miles ago? also both front and rear wishbones wrere replaced 25000 miles ago so the wear shouldnt be that bad anyway should it?

any help from anyone in the know would be a great help

thanks in advance

its a bit pointless complaining to be honest, any fault can occur on any vehicle at any time, you were just unlucky. Now that you have had the repair done there's no way of getting anywhere especially when the repair wasn't done at a seat dealer. Sorry mate but i wouldn't want you to waste your time, i work for a vauxhall dealer and they all work pretty much in the same way.

Totally disagree with STU FR,
Serviced and MOT'd @ Seat and then two months later your head gasket blows?
I'd be hella annoyed. Infact I'd be parking that car in Seat's garage in the way of everything and contacting the head of PR.

Your rights extend as far as "The car should be fit for purpose"
Your head failed within three years and if you have a FSH you should be able to claim that it must of been a fault that existed since the day you bought the car.

If the car has been looked after and serviced properly all througgh its life and the head gasket has gone so close tot he end of the warranty i would push it.

Head gaskets are not a usual thing to go on any car ( unless you got a k-series under the bonnet) esepcially a Vag unit. So push it.

On the subject of whether your mates dad has ripped you off, i'd agrea no not intentionally, but it does sound like this particular car is not his specialist area. thats why i would always speak to a specialist if not taking back to a dealer as they will know whats what before they do a job 9 times out of 10. So i would bet you could have had the same job done cheaper at a specialist.

I think you should push and push. however as the car is now fixed i think you will have less chance of help. But go to the head office as well as the dealer. But like i say, as the work was done by another non dealer garage you will probably not get money back now.

Of course if the car is modded in any way don;t expect a bean of help from SEAT out of warranty.

definitely worth a fight mate, just make sure your mates dad gives you reciepts for the work, i would advise going as high as you can seat wise, write a letter/email or call head office as we all know it going into a dealer would be a waste of a journey
