Spare Part Numbers - Any difference??

When looking for spares on various sites I have often seen spare part numbers very similar to the items I've needed. Very often it is the letter at the end that is different (ignoring the first three digits as they refer to the car model - Altea's is 5P0), does this make any difference? I'm trying to source a rear wiper motor for a 2004 plate Altea part number 5P0 955 711 A. I have found three motors with the same part number except for the last letter, two B's and one C found.

I'm going to confuse you even more now.
According to ETKA, 5P0 955 711 A was replaced by 5P0 955 711 B on 01/08/2007.
Neither of these is shown for a 2004 Altea. The 2 shown are :

5P0 955 711 C ................ for vehicles >>5P-4-000 188
5P0 955 711 ................... for vehicles 5P-5-055 001>>

Unfortunately, ETKA uses a lot of vehicle codes that only make any sense to dealers. I believe the code refers to a date of manufacture or similar (seems to be the facelift date with the Leon) but I can't help further than that.

I was originally under the impression that the last number is a 'version' number. When I was looking for coilpacks for my car, mine ended with an 'A', and the ones I got were 'K', but were the same number.

However, one of the guys on here pointed out two part numbers that only differed with the last digit, but were completely different parts. The post may still be on here somewhere. As Tim describes, it might be for the same named part but for different cars, and therefore physically different.

With some parts, the final letter changes for RHS/LHS etc. Sometimes a number of trim parts for a certain area of the vehicle will share numbers that just vary on the final letter. They can be quite random and sometimes there is a new part number for a part which is still stamped with the original number when it arrives.

Many thanks for replies, however, TimSawF nothing you write has confused me about part numbers. The car was an import via Eire and Motorpoint and although badge as a Stylance it is actually a Reference/Stylance hybrid.
It's definately a 5P0 955 711 A, the car is 5PZ5R015761 which might help. The Valeo Part No is 404.924.B
Any other help gratefully received.

As you are certain of the part number, ETKA does list that it was replaced by 'B', a direct replacement for 'A'. I would go for the 5P0 955 711 B you have found.

Ask for a quote from Dave at SERE motors, on their part of this forum. Give him your part number and see what he comes back with...
