Does anyone know if there are any 'like for like' replacements available? i.e a new base driver so you can keep the esisting tweeter (which I think is ok) but still benefit from a better base?

Over Christmas I finally got round to fitting some infinity's in the front of my Leon....
Only they don't seem as good as the standard speakers !!!

Now either I've completely bulls'ed up fitting them, or I was expecting more than I should have.

My standard speakers used to get to about 14 on the volume before they started to distort, however the new ones only get to 10 on the volume before they sound sh*t ! Plus there is no bass at all coming from them.

Has anyone got any ideas ??

Cheers

I'm watching this thread with interest as I too think the standard speakers in my new Leon are cack. In fact I think the previous owner overstretched them somewhat as they tend to fart quite badly when given beans (no pun intended :))...

Browsing the web I've found some very reasonably priced Clarions which I'm toying with buying. Even if they turn out to be disappointing I could always move them to the back and get something more exotic for the front. Anyone got any experience of these? -

Focals (I have them inthe Mk4 golf currently) are great speakers and most likely what I will be fitting to our Leon, unless Dimond Audio give me some cheapish speakers (I have a full dimond audio build in my astra). Be prepared to pay decent money for focals though.

Infinity's in my opinion are not worth any money at all, why have so many people gone for these????

hi there
i have 4x infinitys in mine and the sound quality is 100 times better than the originals but you cant go much above 12 on the volume and the sound distorts
i think this is due to the head unit being crap aswell 4x 20watts i think .i think to get the best out of them you would need an amp.or a new decent head unit which is costly.

Speaker Upgrade

Hi - finally I can contribute with valued input.

As mine is a company car - I had to make changes which would not affect any of the interior or exterior and be replaceable with OEM products when the car is returned. [B)]

The speakers supplied in the LEON are in fact quite good at what they do as they are balanced to the head unit. The speakers are manuactured by Nokia under license and are the same as the speakers fitted to most standard BMW's (not that BMW's are any good (I've had an M3) without doubt the worst car I have ever had the displeasure to own :banned:).

The Head Unit is unfortunately not up to much :( and 20-30W RMS is a little optimistic - however, this was a no brainer for me as it has to stay put due to the car not being mine.

Therefore I replaced ALL the 8 speakers in my car with straight swap Components by Vibe Kevlar (Mid and Tweeter) and Diamond (Mid and Tweeter) complete with relevant crossovers. Both sets of speaker are very sensative (especially the Vibe Kevlar fronts) so the head unit drives them ok. :funk: All speakers had to spaced out to allow clearence of the window mechanisms behind.

I also have a 500W integrated JBL Sub-Tube in the boot which is fed by High Level In as the Head has no RCA's.

I can increase the volume to 18 pretty much without distortion - apart from my eyes actually vibrating in their sockets - such is the power of the Sub (Twin 12" drivers (one active, one passive)).

Although it's not the ideal setup - it was done this way so as to not land me in trouble when I exchange the car. Ideally a new head unit is the way to go as to be honest the whole standard unit isn't to be sniffed at. But I drive A LOT of miles (45K/annum) and I get very lonely - so music is my only friend on long journeys.

Hopefully this will help a few people to make a more informed decision

Regards

Steve

I agree - Infinity's are over-rated - they pop the cone rubbers with regular frequency.... if you're going for something along the Fashion end - Alpine R have always been a capable range of speakers...

Always was a good reference speaker - not sure about the latest generation. But history states that they are generally under-rated but always decent value for money.

I can't even begin to agree with this... The speakers in the mk1 Leon were great and they came into their own when married to an aftermarket head. The speakers in the mk2 Leon are just pants though. And the vibratey door trim doesn't help matters either...

Deev - which means the MK1 Leon speakers were exceptional as were mine in my old (well, 2005) Octavia. Sound reproduction of the MK2 is quite good although bass is left a little lacking. What it is NOT is a bass punching - air pressure creating animal the majority want (me included). But this does not make it a bad speaker - mid and high range are pretty good. I've heard crisp packets handle Bass better than these - but music sound taste varies from person to person. I won't make a personal retort on your opinion as it is exactly that - your opinion.

Totally agree about the vibratey door trim on the MK2 - best answer is to insulate/seal with rubber door draught excluder, if you can get the sod off! LOL

Fair comment. The mk1 did have exceptional speakers. And yes, the mk2 speakers do reproduce a good amount of detail - the problem is they need to be a little more punchy with the bass to overpower the road noise at motorway speeds. I may actually be being a little harsh on them as at least a couple of mine are quite obviously blown which won't help...

I think I'll bung a couple of those Clarions in the front and hopefully there'll be two non-blown standard fit that I can put in the back. I'm not that bothered about having ridiculously booming audio - I just want to be able to turn my CDs up to motorway-drowning volumes without tons of distortion and farting.

Here, here to that... the road noise on some of the roads in and around Leeds/Bradford - M621, M606 into Bradford is unbelieveable. The new 4 lane section of the M1/M18 intersection is that new silent tarmac - the car is almost silent! Awesome stuff...

The engine in this Leon is so quiet at speed!!!

heres my two pennies worth:
i changed the headunit - built in pioneer flip up satnav as i wanted permanent sat nav in the car and installed an infinity active sub in the boot. i have kept the speakers standard and they sound a lot better like this (bass being fed to a sub so they don't stress as much)
however, they are pretty crappy and would love to change them - if im listening to audio like djs talking on the radio the car noise is enough to drown out speech so ihave to turn it loud enough that when music plays its too loud - does this make sense?
infinity speakers i have found from use in previous cars are a bit bright - high frequancies imo are too pronounced.
the bst car speakers i have used are the focals in my old mk4 golf. they were great all rounders and the bass produced without a sub was awesome! great but expensive!
finally, you can use something like dynamat to reduce vibration when fitting the speakers in the door panel. they do specific sized cutouts and you just roller it on where needed - the join between the speaker and door panel and also behind the speakers is good to reduce secondary reflections

ive used infinity replacements in the doors and kept the standard tweeters as well and run 2x 12" alpine subs on a 1400 wat amp in the boot probably got too much bass now turned them to about a 3rd of power to balance system chris

Are you using Infinity full range speakers? If not and are using components, have you included the crossover to divert the high-pass signal to the standard tweeter, or have you just allowed full range to all?

Have you wired them correctly? If you change the fader to the front then try turning the balance to the left and right does the bass improve? If so you have wired one of the terminals round the wrong way.

Hellfire, this looks like a great set-up, but how easy/difficult was it to fit. Especially regarding the changing of the tweeters. Any possibility of running through it.

Thanks,

Dash

Run through....

Hey Jordash....

I got some of the work done at a local Car Audio Specialist called Technicar in Sheffield. I did try to complete most of the work myself but I had NO IDEA how to remove the front door card.... and route the AMP cable.

I have a few issues regarding the replacement of the original trim (one of the reaons I like to do the work myself) but the sound I get is awesome.

I'm really sorry I can't help you further...

Regards
