Does anyone know if there are any 'like for like' replacements available? i.e a new base driver so you can keep the esisting tweeter (which I think is ok) but still benefit from a better base?

Focals (I have them inthe Mk4 golf currently) are great speakers and most likely what I will be fitting to our Leon, unless Dimond Audio give me some cheapish speakers (I have a full dimond audio build in my astra). Be prepared to pay decent money for focals though.
Infinity's in my opinion are not worth any money at all, why have so many people gone for these????
I'm watching this thread with interest as I too think the standard speakers in my new Leon are cack. In fact I think the previous owner overstretched them somewhat as they tend to fart quite badly when given beans (no pun intended)...
Browsing the web I've found some very reasonably priced Clarions which I'm toying with buying. Even if they turn out to be disappointing I could always move them to the back and get something more exotic for the front. Anyone got any experience of these? -

The speakers supplied in the LEON are in fact quite good at what they do as they are balanced to the head unit. The speakers are manuactured by Nokia under license and are the same as the speakers fitted to most standard BMW's (not that BMW's are any good (I've had an M3) without doubt the worst car I have ever had the displeasure to own).
Deev - which means the MK1 Leon speakers were exceptional as were mine in my old (well, 2005) Octavia. Sound reproduction of the MK2 is quite good although bass is left a little lacking. What it is NOT is a bass punching - air pressure creating animal the majority want (me included). But this does not make it a bad speaker - mid and high range are pretty good. I've heard crisp packets handle Bass better than these - but music sound taste varies from person to person. I won't make a personal retort on your opinion as it is exactly that - your opinion.
Fair comment. The mk1 did have exceptional speakers. And yes, the mk2 speakers do reproduce a good amount of detail - the problem is they need to be a little more punchy with the bass to overpower the road noise at motorway speeds. I may actually be being a little harsh on them as at least a couple of mine are quite obviously blown which won't help...
I think I'll bung a couple of those Clarions in the front and hopefully there'll be two non-blown standard fit that I can put in the back. I'm not that bothered about having ridiculously booming audio - I just want to be able to turn my CDs up to motorway-drowning volumes without tons of distortion and farting.
ive used infinity replacements in the doors and kept the standard tweeters as well and run 2x 12" alpine subs on a 1400 wat amp in the boot probably got too much bass now turned them to about a 3rd of power to balance system chris
Over Christmas I finally got round to fitting some infinity's in the front of my Leon....
Only they don't seem as good as the standard speakers !!!
Now either I've completely bulls'ed up fitting them, or I was expecting more than I should have.
My standard speakers used to get to about 14 on the volume before they started to distort, however the new ones only get to 10 on the volume before they sound sh*t ! Plus there is no bass at all coming from them.
Has anyone got any ideas ??
Cheers

Hi - finally I can contribute with valued input.
As mine is a company car - I had to make changes which would not affect any of the interior or exterior and be replaceable with OEM products when the car is returned.
The Head Unit is unfortunately not up to muchand 20-30W RMS is a little optimistic - however, this was a no brainer for me as it has to stay put due to the car not being mine.
Therefore I replaced ALL the 8 speakers in my car with straight swap Components by Vibe Kevlar (Mid and Tweeter) and Diamond (Mid and Tweeter) complete with relevant crossovers. Both sets of speaker are very sensative (especially the Vibe Kevlar fronts) so the head unit drives them ok.All speakers had to spaced out to allow clearence of the window mechanisms behind.
I also have a 500W integrated JBL Sub-Tube in the boot which is fed by High Level In as the Head has no RCA's.
I can increase the volume to 18 pretty much without distortion - apart from my eyes actually vibrating in their sockets - such is the power of the Sub (Twin 12" drivers (one active, one passive)).
Although it's not the ideal setup - it was done this way so as to not land me in trouble when I exchange the car. Ideally a new head unit is the way to go as to be honest the whole standard unit isn't to be sniffed at. But I drive A LOT of miles (45K/annum) and I get very lonely - so music is my only friend on long journeys.
Hopefully this will help a few people to make a more informed decision
Regards
Steve
