Sports Cat & EML?

JamJay

Hey all. Tonight the LCR decided to throw on it's EML for one reason or another and I have a feeling that it's due to the sports cat and not liking the extra emissions. The car drives as it should, feels damn quick so a boost leak is unlikely. No knocks or tapping either so i'm a bit confused.

I was lead to believe that a sports cat wouldn't bring up and EML/is legal and it hasn't done since it was fitted 2wks ago. But can they do this?

I am unable to VAGCOM it myself as my laptop is broken and i'd rather not pay a garage £50+ for the priveledge.

If it is one of the lambda probes that is causing this, how do I get it to go off? I don't want to get the EML mapped out because lets face it, that's pretty damn stupid. There must be another way?

Thanks :)

P.S. If anyone in the Surrey/Sussex/South London area can help me by doing a fault scan, I would really really appreciate your help.

jamjay what i would do if i was u is, get a faultcode reader from ebay, there about £20. keep it in the car, glove box ect. i no there not half as good as vagcom but they are handy and always there with u. it sounds to me u will have to keep turning the eml off every few weeks, or you could get a wayne angle block.

Thanks for the replies lads. Am I correct in saying that if I clear the fault code, it will turn off the EML and when/if it comes back on, I can turn it off again? If not, hope do I turbn the EML off?

What's a wayne angle block?

Another question, will the car fail a MOT with ths sports cat? I thought they were legal, hence choosing this option over decat

I got the email address for Wayne if you need a block, bear in mind hes from America tho and is usually really busy.

The block spacers the 2nd lambda away from direct flow so it doesn't bring the EML on.

It'll pass. My 1st LCR had a full Piper turbo back with the hi-flow sports cat(very non-standard). My emissions we're actually cleaner AFTER I had the Piper put on :)

Might have just been the more constant use of v-power though

De-cat is the illegal MOT fail dude.

What I don't get is that the EML has come on due to excess pollution, so surely the emissions have to be bad? Did you have an EML on with you setup t0m?

If you wouldn't mind sharing that email address Adam, i'd be very grateful :)

did you get the diagnosis excess pollution from the manual mate?? means nothing really, code could be totally unrelated to emissions.

needs to be scanned to get the code or everyones guessing really.

I know this might sound wrong but mine did the same, came on for no reason, exhaust had been on ages, the log said lamda sensor, of which there are 2, one pre cat one post, and it was saying post cat at fault, however this problem was solved by fitting a new maf sensor. Since fitting new maf, lamda sensors havent played up once. It would ahve been easy to spend money on new lamda sensor and they aint cheap, but the real cause of problem was maf sensor and there was nothing wrong with the lamda sensors at all.
Havent had any issues with light since new maf sensor went in. Also light will stay on for a few days untill emiisions reduce, or it is cleared.
This might not be your problem but dont trust everything the diagnostics tell you.

Thanks for that info, something i'd not consider otherwise. How did you figure that it was the MAF meter at fault? They are completely unlinked aren't they .

Touch wood it isn't 'error 666: car dying, you're funked' tomorrow :D

Well error code was saying lamda probe 2 was at fault, however the readings for maf sensor was also on the low side with vagcom, so the fault logged was blaming the lamda but replacing maf sensor first cured the problem. It was actually paul at jabba sport (top bloke) who services my car that suggested replacing maf first as he has seen a few with same error code, and as the code says fault with lamda sensor replaced it with new one only for error code to re appear later on.
As my maf readings were low he recommended replacing that first, and he was right. Maf was replaced about 2 months ago, still using original lamda sensors and warning light has never come on again.

So here's the error code (thanks to another helpful forum member :)).

1 Fault Found:
16804 - Catalyst System: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
P0420 - 35-00 - -

It looks to him like the car thinks the Cat is broken, because it's flowing too much but obviously that's because it's supposed to. We cleared the error code and the EML went off, but I suspect it'll come back so thanks Adam for that address.

Grey225, it looks like that wasn't my issue this time around but it's great to know in case it ever does occur.

Looks like the only way to stop the EML light is to get a stage 2 and map it out, or the wayne angle block mod.

Hi mate

I had no EML light for a year and a half of owning my previous LCR with the full piper turbo back. Was good as gold.

I'm not sure if the emissions light being thrown is just a reaction to bigger airflow going through the car? It's very touchy the EML from what I read.

I agree with DJ-LIAMC, get it mapped out. Should clear then

Thanks for all of the replies and I think you're right T0m. I have cleared it off now and it hasn't come back after a long drive (touch wood) so who knows. If it does though, I'll just keep clearing the error code until Stage 2 :)

why would you want to map the eml light out any way its a safe thing would you say that if you engine went not saying it will but surly its better safe than sorry:shrug: just get a wayne block or oxygen senser adapter to sort it:)
