Where abouts is it coming from? Could be aux belt tensioner if near the alternator.

I am getting what i think is this? goes away after car has been driven for a bit and it warmed up, but cold its pretty annoying. Car is under warranty, is it something i should have the dealer look at?

It will be the alternator belt or something attached to it, once the engine heats up the noise will go away.

Have a pull on the alternator belt if you can reach it/see it.
Check for any pulleys that seem to be moving too much, there should be a little play in them but not too much, as far as I'm aware it's self adjusting.

Also check the wear on the belt itself, see if it's smooth on any of the sides that run through the pulleys...or rough at the edges, might need changed.

What's the mileage on the car? Has the belt been changed before?

I see you have same engine as me, 1.2, it's dead easy to reach and pull on.

On the image below the configuration for our engines is the second one down on the right hand side. Most the pulleys are just idlers, the one you want to look for is the one marked "F", thats the pulley that failed on mine, it controls the tension of the belt. It should hardly move at all, but when I pulled mine it travelled about 2 inches, it should barely move.

If it is overly slack look for a smooth patch under the bottom most part of the belt where it runs just over the oil sump, this should part of the belt should be closest to you if you are standing at the front of the car.

I had the belt and the tensioner replaced under warranty and it was priced including labour at a shade over £150 for the whole job.

if it's just the belt that should be must cheaper.

Hope this helps, hope I didn't go into too much detail, I did have video showing what I'm talking about but I had to re-build my phone last month and photos and video weren't part of my backup schedule at the time. I'll have a look in case I still have it kicking about somewhere.

i've started getting this recently...car is just over 1 yr old. it does sound like a fan belt as if you accelerate it goes away. wouldn't have thought the fan kicks in on cold startup  would this be covered by warranty?

well it was definatley a belt anyway. im sure the garage told me it was the fan belt that was changed

its definatley worth trying to claim on the warranty, surely it should have a better life span or quality if its only a year old

I also had this a few times on a cold morning going to work it would go on reving the engine and wouldnt come back, i squirted a little bit of WD40 on the alternator pulley and its cured now. just make sure u get no WD40 on the alternator or the belt.

I had this after a belt change, it was loud when cold, and still there but quieter when warm... So I did what L14M did, WD40 on the pulley while it was running and it instantly went quiet. Every so often it comes back so I just squirt it again!
