Steering angle fault

I've replaced the down pipe on my LCR, which obviously involved dropping the subframe, disconnecting the steering rack, etc etc. However as soon as it was all back together and I started it for the first time, the ESP light was on the dash, and I have the fault: 00778:005 when I scan it. There was a malfunction fault as well which was 00778:003, but I cleared that and it hasn't come back since.

I have checked live data and I'm getting a reading from the sensor, so I assume it's working? It's also reading 0° when the steering wheel is straight. But my scanner is unable to do an electronic calibration on Seat's and I don't have VAGcom or anything like that, so I tried following the instructions on Ross-Tech and that hasn't worked either. Would it just be a case of replacing the sensor/clock spring? Or what else could I try? TIA

As you've mentioned the steering rack was disconnected from the column my initial thoughts are that either the rack or steering wheel have been moved from their positions which in turn have thrown the steering angle sensor out of sync.

The steering rack has dowels which go in to the subframe, and the steering column would only connect to the rack one way. When I re-connected everything, the steering wheel was in the same position as it was before. So unless the whole subframe is in a different position now (I guess that could be possible?), I don't know if that is the case.

But anyhow. Would it be possible to now sync or calibrate it in it's current position? And how would I go about doing that?

It's a difficult one, I've not got ESP on my version so don't have any first hand experience with the system. If the the steering angle sensor is working on live data, then I would suggest a faulty wheel speed sensor. Have a look at live data from the the wheel speed sensors in the ABS, if one of them is faulty then it won't calibrate. Did the wiring to the front WSS's get damaged when removing the subframe? Are they plugged in fully?

If so, then VCDS is the only way if the Ross-tech solution won't work. You definitely won't be able to calibrate it without it.

I don't believe anything was damaged...I didn't notice anything any way, but I will get live data up and check the wheel speed sensors. That will be the easiest thing for me to do right now, since I'm working for the next week or so and it's always pitch black by time I get home.

If they all appear to be fine, then I guess I will have to take it to a garage, or find somebody with VCDS to calibrate it for me.

Unfortunately a new steering angle sensor hasn't fixed the problem...So I may need to invest in VCDS, or take it to a VAG specialist garage who already have the software to recalibrate it.

I was able to leave live data on, and screen record on my scanner while I went for a drive, so I checked and confirmed that all the wheel speed sensors are working. I assume all the ABS sensors will be fine as well, because the ABS light isn't on (the light does work)? The only light that's on is the ESP one. But I'm fitting coilovers tomorrow, so I'll check all the sensors any way while it's up in the air.
