Hi all, I still have standard stereo in car and I'm looking to change it, problem I have is that the previous owner told me that when he fitted an aftermarket stereo the alarm system began playing up and going off all the time when car was locked etc, as soon as he changed back to the original the problem stopped... Is this a common problem as I want to play my music through my iPod and I'm fed up of radio tuned devices!! Lol.
Any help greatly appreciated :)

I think I've heard that there's a way to run a ipod through the oem unit at the back. Mines oem and had a cable labeled mute1? Have you checked a wiring diagram?

No I haven't got that far into it myself yet as I have only just thought of looking into it, will check the wiring as I haven't heard that before, thanks

Have you tried 1 of those cassettes with a phono lead attached to it. That's what I use and it works really well. Excellent sound quality. You can pick 1 up for less than a fiver off eBay. We'll worth the money.

You have to swap over a couple of wires to make sure it remembers the settings. Maybe he just didn't do that and it affected the alarm?

I know the two Sony stereos I've fitted come with the two wires made interchangeable specifically for VAG vehicles.

Thank you for the advice guys, I didn't get a chance to ask him what he did, I actually have a Sony xplode stereo that I can put in but have been too worried about alarm to bite the bullet lol, I will let everyone know how I get on, thanks again for the help

I'm no auto spark but I have fitted a couple of stereos to my old cars. The thing about switching the wires over to remember the setting I think could be something to do with it. I found in the past that when the wires weren't switched the radio could stay powered up constant so I was thinking maybe it was draining the battery and triggering the alarm. As I said I'm no auto spark just a thought.

That makes sense andymac, hadn't thought of it like that, I hope to get round to it this weekend but my missus is possibly about to drop so I don't think I would be popular if I had car in bits at the time lol

Do one thing just take out that standard stereo having lots of issues with it, it is better you take some other stereo and get out from this problem. I don't think it is a common problem in all cars.

From what I can remember when I fitted my stereo was that I had to swap 2 wires over too. They belong to the live and switched lived which were on simple bullet connectors.

Other than that I have never had issues with my alarm going off either
