Hi all,
I have a strange rattle/vibration coming from what sounds like the exhaust (manifold end) when I give it medium amount of throttle going through 2nd and 3rd gear at 3k RPM, doesn’t do it at stand still or if I pass through 3K RPM gently just when under heavy load. It’s a highish pitched vibration.

I have had a look underneath and nothing seems loose, my first suspect was the manifold heat shield, but it seems ok.

Can cambelt tensioners make that kind of rattle?

Any other ideas on areas to check? Its a Cupra 16v.

Cheers

Dan

Dan,had something very similar recently,it was only when i got fully under the car that i could see the heat shielding around the downpipes was loose,it was only secured with a tack weld,a large jubilee clip has done the trick nicely, might be worth checking from underneath?

Cheers Paul.

Cheers Paul,

My heatsheild already has a big jubilee clip around it from a few years ago when it came loose.

I have a pit in the garage and had a look underneith with the car running yesterday and couldnt hear or feel anything that was loose, it only seems to do it when there is some load applied in 2nd/3rd. The only thing I could think of was that an engine mount is on its way out and when you apply alot of load it moves the downpipe and shield to make it rattle.

was just about to suggest engine mount causing downpipe to touch the chassis

try rocking the downpipe (on ramp/pit) sit if there is that much play mate

could be bottom end my friends one did that hit around 2k rpm and above sounded horrible

ive got same problem too but happens in every gear at almost all revs. i can hear the crank bearings grinding away so i think its related.

well if its a 16valve i have a whole engine for sale needs a head gasket but u can take bits out of it if u need it?

Mine is doing this aswell, although i think it is where my cat has dropped slightly and the pipe after is vibrating on the bracket :S
