stuck in 3rd gear

Over about half an hour my car started to feel 'different' when trying to use 2nd gear.
I then went to change down from 3rd to second but it wouldn't engage and is now stuck in 3rd gear !
The gear shift moves around through the normal range but feels loose and wont disengage from 3rd gear.
I managed to drive home like this and the clutch feels fine and doing everything correctly.
Hopefully this wont mean a new gearbox??
Any advice would be appreciated.

Linkage mate, should be easily fixable.

Thanks for the replies guys..I decided to get AA to have a look and it seems the cable sheath had come out of its housing on the engine side and he has managed a temporary repair.
I'm relieved its a cable replacement needed rather than a gearbox !!
