um i have a compressor LOL if need be i can get an airgun :) is this a request or a hint.

also do you have msn mate seem like a useful person to have lol.

i had to use an airgun dude, for the collar bolts on the bottom of the strut, and then had to jump up and down on the arm to get enough clearance for it to pop out!!

Jimski

Airgun :/

would not a really long rod extention do?

Can anyone tell me what size/shape nuts are involved as im going to get some spring compressors from the halfords down the road etc. and if i need anything specialist be good to know.

as above would still be useful, but talking to a VAG worker last night drenching my bolts etc in WD40 would be a good idea apparently. so im just putting that here for future knowlege of people who may read the thread :)

James would it be ok to PM me your phone number, i will be doing this saturday and if i get in a pickle be nice to have someone to call :D.

Also if you could give me a biref list of the tools you used would be good too. I might try and make a guide for this .

tools.........

1 set of axle stands
2 ton trolley jack, dont use the car one, doesnt go high enough for the axle stands, vag jacks are shite
good socket set. 16mm for the bolts and 20mm for the top mount nut
plenty of wd40, spray on night before on all bolts, especially the strut bolt that holds it to the bearing housing.
rubber mallet to whack the strut out
spring compressors
allen/hex key set

**** ton of patience and sweat bands.....

cold chisels to split the bearing housing.

grease to regrease the bolts etc.

thats about it, you will probably find youll need more but thats what i used for starters

awesome, ive already wd40 mine and gonna do it each night till saturday so thats all good. need to grab some grease, and all the rest i have from when i did my brakes.

maybe get a new rubber mallet my old ones seen better days. hopefuly replace my tie rods etc while im in there.

to do the fronts.....

jack car up, put on axle stands, both sides.

no need to remove discs etc, just be careful.

remove the bolt that goes through the wheel bearing housing, holds the bottom of the strut in.

place a cold chisel into the split where the bolt came from and give it a nice tap. this should open the bearing housing.

open bonnet, pull of strut top cover, you now need to remove the bolt you can see.

place suitable allen key into the bolt, you will need to use them spanners that bend downwards to grip the nut. 20mm i think.

while holding the allen key unscrew the nut. hard work this bit, fiddly...

this will relase the top mount from the car.

with a bit of luck the strut should now come out.. on the passenger side you will need to remove the anti roll bar droplink, to allow the frame to drop slightly to release the strut.

persuade it to come out with your mallet.
mark the bottom of the strut so you can see if it is coming out...

once youve got them out, believe me its hard, then the whole suspension unit should drop out.

be careful to undo the abs sensor from the strut before you start whacking it.

once the suspension is out then its basically the reverse to put back in.#

dont forget to compress the springs on the new setup, and put all the mounts, bearings back in before you replace on the car.

once new setup ready, push through the hole where the strut top goes and put back in bottom shock mount, remove the chisel and rebolt back up.

you may need to jack the car up upder the axle to lift the suspension up back through the top hole.

reconnect the top mount in the same way you undid....

connect all wires back up.

bolts back in...

drop the jack under the arm
reconnect anti roll bar link

and hey presto you should be there.

driver side the same but should drop enough without undoing the arb link.

if it doesnt then undo it.

rears... piece of piss

jack up, axle stands etc

undo bolts where shock is connected at the bottom, do both sides first

place jack under the rear arm to support and compress the springs.

undo the top strut mounts both sides

slowly release the jack, steer clearof the springs, they should drop out.

jobs a goodun

youll need the top mounts for the rears, so unscrew like the front mount and reconnect to your new setup.

reconnect your new strut as reverse of removal.

connect all bolts, place the springs in the seats.

let the jack down and hey presto.........

you may need to compress the new springs to get them in the seats at the back.

uuuugh.

mmmmh, it is a bit.

itl be the bolts thats the pain mate, hard to get off manually.

air tools are the way fwd

it is fairly straitforward mind..
