Would I correct in saying if you switch it off you lose the tcs assist but still have some active stability control and if you did something really silly it would still cut in?

to clarify:

you have ESP as as such you are correct in what you are saying i believe.
Tiff did say in a 5th gear episode to hold the button in for 8 seconds to totally deactivate it.... if this is correct im not sure.

for those that have TCS, they will not have active stablility control (electronic stability programme / ESP) to start with, and will therefore not have it when the TCS is turned off either!

I find the tcs can cause more problems than it's trying to fix, I was accelerating up a long sweeping bend and the tcs cut power causing the weight to shift forwards suddenly and the back end to twitch.

Take the same bend with it off and you may get the inside front spin up slightly but it's so much less dramatic.

Obviously if the car's going to completely swap ends I'd apreciate the ESP working it's magic.

Exactly mate, anytime i drive its always off!
Some esp systems work really well but the Leon one is guff!
My mates got a Focus ST3 and he CAN NOT drive - at all! and his ESP makes him look like a driving god!
