hi all i run a leon 1.8 20v turbo on a 52 plate, normally the tempriture gauge wen engine warm is normally at 90 an doesnt move, yesturday i was driving an it started to drop down to 60 an back to 90. Any ideas people????

That would be the thermostat.

Mine done excatly the same thing last month :)

Yeah I'd say so :cartman:

Confused...

Just to throw in my tuppence worth - I've been getting the same issue: temp gauge drops as soon as I'm going down hill. LEE69 on here told me it was probably the thermostat which seems to be confirmed here (especially as I spent £27 on a genuine CTS to replace what was probably a perfectly good one :()

In my old LC it caused the engine to run rich and numerous engine management lights but none so far this time (been 2-3 months without any drop in mpg or performance) so I haven't been too fussed about sorting it). Slightly concerning that it may result in coolant going round the radiator constantly - is it something that I really should get fixed? It's going in for an MOT tomorrow so might ask them to have a look

Sorry to revive an old thread but thought it was better then starting yet a new one on this topic :)

I have now replaced the CTS and the thermostat, the climate control reads a constant 90, my mpg is as good as it ever was (mid/high 30's on a run) and the heater works fine. Yet my temp gauge still drops when I go down hill or take my foot of the gas for more than a few seconds. My mechanic said when he replaced the thermostat that he couldn't see anything wrong with the old one

So I've now spent over 60 quid replacing things that probably worked fine which is annoying. Or to look at it positively, it's cost me that amount to confirm that my engine is running at the correct temperature and I supposedly have working parts. It seems literally the only thing not working properly is the needle, so do I just put up with it as one of my car's quirks (as others on here seem to do), or carry on wondering if something is seriously wrong??
