the age old question of remaps

well me and space coyote are up for getting our cars remapped (his is a mk2 tdi 140 sport, and mines a mk1 tdi 150 fr) We were gonna revo, then i read around and custom-code map was reported to be "smoother" .I was worried by stories of clutch slippage so thought that that might be better for my driving style (500 miles a week on average, mostly mway dueling, cough, sorry cruising, but do like to test the right pedal at the lights sometimes  ). Then space coyote read about bell-auto remaps which also sound very good (and cheaper than the other two especially when you add sps1, vag com etc). Now I think we are both having our heads done in deciding which one to go for lol. We read all the posts out there so how the hell do we decide? I know there have been a million threads on which remap, so instead how would you suggest we decide. Does anyone have feedback on bell auto? I think we need to make our minds up soon or we could keep on pondering forever lol. Oh yeah the remap needs to be switchable by the way.
also is it worth putting in a green cotton filter in the same time as the remap (over the standard oem one)?

cheers :)

HI
I carnt comment on other companys tuning as i dont want to pass judjement.

I don't do any switches for any cars,

I only do remaps or chip changes on older cars.
( most tuners dont solder on older cars )

Here is some feedback from 3 members of this forum .

These were 3 totaly different cars with different BHP as std and 3 different ECU,s.

1x EDC15
1XEDC16
1X EDC15 But chip swap.

The info may help you .

Regards pete

Ps why do you need switchable ? Just curious

I'd certainly recommend Celtic Tuning. Just had my Altea 2.0 TDi DSG done and its really smooth and progressive. £360 all in, done at my home. Very friendly and efficient.
I'm sure there are others out there who are also good, just giving info on my own experience.

well - the switchability narrowed it down and in the end went to custom code /jbs today and what can I say that hasnt been already said?......

smoooooooth.....

1st class service from the guys - top bunch of blokes. was good to meet the legendary James and Mike does make a mean cup of tea (thanks for going and getting some milk as well mike)

the remap is awesome - smooth, pulls in everygear. Had a 60 mile trip back home from JBS down the M1 which strangely seemed to take about half the time it normally does ;)

stopped about half way (on james advice) and seemed even better after restarting.

all in all very very impressed with everything.

cant really recommend the remap or the service highly enough.

now time to start saving for uprated brakes me thinks ;) (and to get the grin surgically removed from my face)

A BIG THANKS TO ALL AT JBS/CC

See you soon! ;)

Bang In The Middle.
Custom Code is switchable to stock via VAG-COM & downloding settings from CC homepage.
Phase 2 is more advanced & you can change the map settings (boost)ect...

Green panel filterl flows more freely than OEM.
I have it in my LCR, but good to know it can make a slight difference with a re-map

Just to give you even more mind-f*ck - have a look at this link:-

and this car that's been done (I'm not advertising the car and have no vested interest so don't see this as any kind of recommendation) :-

Allard seem to do upgraded clutch plates for £180 + fitting. My Revo'd Leon only slips if you floor it from say 1800rpm in 5th or 6th when its cold or damp. I like Revo and also had it on my S3 and it has proven reliable and trouble free for me.

hmm..nice work. that golf looks like a nice bit of work.

gonna do the strutt brace and splitter next week and then start saving up for brakes and clutch etc ;)

like the idea of one day going for the full monty with injectors/turbo etc but it depends how long i end up keeping it for (as do about 25000miles pa on average)

took my mate for a spin in it last night - said it was "ferking rapid!! (esp for a deisel)" :p

another update....

just thought I'd post an update incase anyone found it useful - have driven nearly 1000 miles so far this week so had a good chance to see how the beast performs :)

have to say - no problems so far (touch wood lol)
is beautiful to drive. once its off it shifts! have driven it pretty hard since I got it done and havent noticed any clutch slippage so far (again touch wood) tbh I have tried not to floor it setting off from lights too often but its quick enough away from a start without having to have your foot 100% to the floor. I cant say the clutch slip wont happen (mine has only got just under 8000 on the clock so far) and if and when the clutch goes I guess I'll just have to get a sachs or something.

did drive it very sensibly yesterday and today (well apart from a blat up to 120 on a private road to leave an A4 and a modded escort in my wake - audi slinked back to middle lane at 70 after that lol) I wanted to see what I could get out of a full tank. I went from Leics to Margate and back yesterday and from leics to ratlett via MK and back today and when i pulled up outside just before it said I had done 587miles and the fuel light will prop come on in the next few miles - so not bad! I think thats prob up on before CC.

as for fuel econ after remap driving spiritedly it doesnt seem to drink much more than before either tbh. (certainly less than the ST3 I was thinking of getting instead of the Leon)

oh yeah and with the green cotton filter in I can here the turbo whistle even at hight speeds - not too much to be annoying - just enough to be nice.

and the lower strutt brace seems to have tightened up the front end round the twisties as well.

all in all a very happy bunny:)

Just seen this, and although this is an awesome looking golf and someone got a good car for £10,500, I don't believe it is a phase 4. Mine's pushing 220bhp and its only somewhere around a phase 2, possibly some bits verging on phase 3. Phase 4 should have power heading into the high 200s. Well, thats where I hope to be going with a bigger turbo. Anyone else think this?
