The secret to decent MPG in your LCR !

So I started filling my car up with Optimax a few wks ago after advice on here and a few other places and have now seen a massive difference !

If you;

1) Do the speed limit on the motorway
2) Put 99 Octane in your car
3) Have a stage 1 remap

You will get a decent MPG !

I'm averaging around 38 - 39 MPG now and when I check the trip computer it says my tank when at 3/4 full is worth 335 Miles.

I'm adamant that when I was on 95 octane that when I filled up full it said 340 or 345 miles I was good for. I reckon with a full tank it'll prob read somewhere around the 400 miles mark !

Many of you will undoubtedly know this but I thought I would share the knowledge !

but...what is the point in good MPG? its a HOT HATCH, this car was made to be blasted around B roads, not sat doing 70 on a motorway (hoping and praying for 30mpg!)

dude, im not made of money, but i hardly ever look at my MPG. If it starts to get empty then it gets filled. I knew these cars like a drink when i was looking to buy.

If owners are constantly banging on about MPG then theres no point in owning a car like this...

there's a time and a place for both. I dont drive like a saint but if there aint no point in lamping it i do drive like a bit of a grandad. There's no point in hammering it point to point in town and when your going to get caught behind slower moving traffic. Plus i always take it easy when ive got the mrs and daughter in the car

i took it out for a spin (whats top end cos it went to 140 and had plenty more on sat nav) and it did £20 of ultimate in about 30 miles maybe less

You can also eek the fuel out if you have a boost gauge and drive so you always show vacuum.

But as said, what's the fun in that. I'm lucky to get 18mpg.

Exacto! If on long trip wthen take it easy and you'll achieve good mpg. If you come to nice twisty roads and its empty then open the taps and have some fun.....would be a shame to have a willing car and not use it for a laugh when the opportunity presents itself

come on people, be realistic here...no one sits at 70 on the motorway....80mph is the norm, but who pootles on the motorway? the mid range of the LCR is why we bought it for...

ok yeh, if i was driving to scotland from london, then i would go a 'bit' easier lol, but any other journey i will be driving it normally

I have to say, coming from a LC TDI to an LCR.

With the LC TDI I could blast all over and then check the mpg and it was nice and high. Every car I've had in the last 10 years I've put fuel in and reset the trip mileage.

With my 1.0 Micra, 1.0 Corsa, 1.2 MkIV Ibiza, 2x 1.6 Primera, 1.9TDI Cupra Leon.

All of them pretty much give or take was about 200 miles from each £20.

Now I'm in an LCR, I don't bother resetting the trip, it's just upsetting. So I don't. And I very rarely check the mpg, cos that's not what this car is about. Sure, on the occasions I do check from a long leisurely run with the missus it's nice to see close to 30mpg +/- 3mpg either way.

But it's not an obsession anymore. It's fun, fun costs £.

I am currently on a mission just to see how many miles I can get out of a tank, so am driving extremely carefully - I find the best thing for economy is not how hard you accelerate, but how hard you brake. If you don't use the brakes, and just freewheel to slow down, or use engine braking (so the MPG reads --.-) you will do much better than just accelerating gently and still wasting all the petrol used by braking to a stop again.

As said, this car aint about MPG, and I CERTAINLY don't plan on carrying this on, just an interesting test to see how economical these engines can actually be...

For anyone whose interested, I have done a 20 mile trip home from petrol station, 2 trips to work and back(18miles each way all A roads), a little 5 mile pootle around town with the mrs and then my trip to work today (roughly 120 miles) and am currently averaging....

41.5mpg!

Needle hasnt even got halfway between 3/4 and full yet! apparently I have 420 miles to go on this tank.....

I know the car aint designed to be frugal, but it makes a bloody big difference to your pocket, and with fuel prices these days I aint suprised I'm the only one who is starting to look at MPGs!

Consider also that remaps can affect the calibrations and accuracies of the said quantities.

i usualy have a day or two trying to get decent mpg and then kick myself up the arse and tell myself that i bought the car because its a fast/fun car not because its good on fuel lol but since the remap i have noticed when i am on a decent run and im taking it easy (because the mrs and kids are in the car) i do get decent mpg

To add to this, I bought the car for fun but also look after, seen as my driveto work is 15 minutes each way though town there's no booting chance with getting up to temp and lots of hills so never expect much. Though I've started taking a loner flatter route.

lol...it really is upsetting to keep looking at the fuel gauge go down, cos especially from halfway IT DROPS!!...you are right though, on the rare occasions im on the motorway its good to see 34-35 mpg but that is driving at 70 in the slow lane.

yes bud you are right about the engine braking it will defo help with the fuel saving (and help with unwanted brake dust on your freshly cleaned alloys..)

In my first reply, i wasnt meaning to be 'funny', as fuel prices are stupidly high, i dont earn big money (in fact im a peasant at the mo) and yeh in the past i considered selling her up for a good TDI but the car gives me too much fun to sell up and go all boring. I realize many peeps on here have families so it is more of a tool than a fast car, but if you are constantly driving the car off turbo or 5th gear in a 30 zone just to get better economy, well then it may be time to sell her on for a TDI or something.

Dont worry mate thats not my usual style of driving! Haha, just trying it out on this one tank to see what it will do! And yeah its nice not having filthy alloys as well lol!

Maximum I've had is 38 mpg on Motorway doing about 65mph average (don't ask why) and on a run to Heathrow had 34-35 mpg at about 70ish. I always use Tesco Super99.

My average at present is about 24mpg. But I only have a 5 mile trip to work and back each day, which is stop/start and some traffic.

No point getting to hung up on fuel costs/mpg unless doing some serious mileage.

The most mpg I've achieved is 33mpg at 65 on the motorway in 6th gear, but I only lasted an hour before I became soooo bored and went back to driving it how it should be.

I rarely look at the mpg, as said above if it was an important factor I would have bought a diesel. I drive gently to and from work as it's only 11miles and by the time I've reached my destination the oil has only just reached good temperature for booting it (unless I go the long way round for a blast) .

I just fill up when I need to, and don't even know what the price of v power is...ignorance is bliss!

yea same ear dont care about the price of v power its good stuff and has for the miles per gallon i went from donny to skeg vegus and used 3/4 of a tank becouse the roads are great lol and racing a vect all the way there dint help either::

thing is, if you start to drive like this the ECU will adapt and it will feel sluggish when you actually do give it the beans

unless you have a VAG COM/liquid gauge.....you'll have to manually reset the TB
