Just done this 2nite, car covered 52K miles and needed a clean, fitted new gasket, and done the TB alignment with VAG COM after it.

The inlet tubing was slightly oily to the touch is that anything to worry about, the bottom of the inlet manifold looked also a little oily but is this normal after covering 52K miles?

Hmm might give this a go myself..
TBA sounds a pain though not having VAG-COM myself and don't know of anyone in the area with it..
Even on drive-by-wire systems surely with the ignition on you can operate the throttle as normal and just don't unplug it!

Can you use anything other than Carb Cleaner? Isopropyl Alcohol for instance? I could just buy some Carb Cleaner of course :p

I didn't unplug mine but think its best to do the alignment, yeah you can open the valve by putting a brick on the accelerator pedal when ignition is on.

I used Auto glym engine and component cleaner which did the trick.

Well I popped the hose off at lunch and there was barely anything on that side. Dissappointing really as I was hoping for a very cheap performance increase :-D
Is it worth pulling it apart if the outside looks fine? Nothing was caked on at all there was a very thin coating of oil which wiped straight off and a tiny bit of soot on the butterfly.

I'm guessing it must have been done before as mine is on 91k

When i took the hose off it looked very clean, however i took the complete unit off and the other side was filthy. Worth checking.

To add to this debate about the need to remove the TB when cleaning it, I had the same opinion of "if you're going to do something do it right with no shortcuts".

So being a bit unsure I contacted my SEAT dealer (workshop manager, really helpfull guy in the past - saved me a fortune on many occassions), and asked him if I remove my TB to clean it and replace the gasket, will you re-align the TB for me?

He responded with, "no need, you just turn the igintion to position 1, press the accelerator down and this will allow you to clean the otherside of the TB."

You can clean the pipe side without the accelerator pressed. Well this is what I did and this has removed the flat spots in the acceleration (1500-2000)rpm.

My cupra now runs so smooth it is fantastic, as I had already replace the N75 valve last month with only a slight improvment.

Cheep fix for an annoying issue, well done Cupra.net....

Cheers.

Rob..

Totally Cowie,

The differnence is unbelivable for a £5.95 can of carb cleaner and a cloth and some cotton buds....lol

High mod to cash outlay.. anymore of these are welcome....

MAkes for safe driving as well.

Time to bring up an old thread. Was in my local Halfords today asking for carb cleaner - despite the website saying they had some in stock at that store the guy there couldn't find any and claimed he'd never seen it there.

Is there anything else I can use safely for this job? Degreaser or the like?

I bought some Wynn's carb cleaner from halfords the other day, removed the Tb and cleaned it. My Tb was worse than the one in the first post but, as the car is on 98k I expected it to be. The inlet mani was also dirty but I did t clean that. Car feels much smoother now.
