Hi folks,
I have a manual Seat Leon ST 290 since April, really enjoying the combination of fun and practicality (two little ones). Mileage is 79k.
Unfortunately, I’ve had some issues recently, car wouldn’t start and ended up replacing the alternator, starter motor and battery. It finally starts as normal but there’s a bigger issue.
For about eight weeks the engine has been a little rough at idle. The engine management light has been on, warning lights of stop-start system failure and cruise control.
More recently, I get a warning that the oil pressure is low and to keep RPM below 4000. Both issues are intermittent (oil pressure warning stays on for less than a minute) and seem to occur independently. I’ve attached a picture of the warnings. The console check from the mechanic comes up with three warnings: Oil Pressure, Cam Shaft/Crankshaft position and a third I don’t remember.
I’ve taken it to a couple of mechanics and they tell me it needs a new timing chain and oil pump. The first mechanic is a VW specialist and the second a back street garage.
The estimate for the parts and work is in the £2k range which is much more than I expected but I have little experience of this issue. Previous cars were a Cayman S and a Yaris, even the Cayman never had a bill like that.
From my research on here it’s not a common issue and the chain would be expected to last the life of the engine. The car has a 1st stage remap from previous owner and upgraded clutch, not sure either would have caused this issue.
So, I’d like some advice, does the diagnosis sound correct? If so, would the remap/clutch been a factor?
Also, anyone in the Slough/Windsor/Maidenhead area that you can recommend for the work? And advice on part and part numbers. One of the mechanics insists on parts from TPS and they seem to be very expensive.
I have attached report and work suggested too.
Thanks
Fraz
