I,m sure the esp is still active even when you turn the t/c off. I remember doing some laps in my old LCR with t/c off but the esp still chimed in when the rear started coming round on a tight left hander.
I do drive my K1 with the t/c turned off every now and then, but all i get is tyre squeal in the first 4 gears and the thought that my tyres are turning to mush
