When the MAF has failed, the ecu uses a default 'safe' table to run. This table does not rely on most normal sensors (except map) ). While the ecu is running in this mode, other functions like TCS are shut down.

is there any chance that the car would be running less power than normal? over fueling? under fueling? etc when the maf is doomed

Most likely at work
happened to me randomly. disconnected the battery for half an hour and it fixed itself. might be worth doing before spending any money on it

Ok all a little progress on my TCS light.

First a few things I have found out and some I havent!

Not sure how/why or if the MAF can influence the TCS or whether is causes the car to run in safe mode.

But if you are in safe mode, then you will know about it, performance, power fuel economy will all be affected.

My MAF is fine, I have a faulty "steering angle sensor" gone code 00778 I think, The fault can be cleared initially but comes straight back when you do the test on it.

So the TCS can also be the steering angle sensor, if you are in safe mode then it will be obvious.

Tomorrow the garage is calling some tech bod to see what the fix is, I will report back further with progress and cost!!

Sorry to also jump on board this thread - i posted ages ago that ive never infact had traction control. Vag com brings up the latteral ABS sensor, as my abs works fine I put this down to the traction control. Not overly fussed - as I like not having it on. But also I like everything to work! LOL!!

Had my car a year now, no fault codes apart from that and had a Revo stage 2 done few weeks ago. Is there a possibility my MAF is shot - and has been since owning it?! Ive never had traction control nor ever had a light - even if I unplug the MAF I dont get a TC light on the dash....................

Many thanks for the help, and sorry for the hi-jack!!

When you floor it and loose traction do you get anything flashing on the dash?
pressing the ESP button makes no difference?

If youve a sensor out id have thought youd have some warning on the dash that ESP isnt connected.

Strange. blown bulb?

Exact - when I loose traction it just lights up the wheels and no light. I wil go check in a bit - cant rem if the TC light comes in with the ign. I think it does - but then never see it again! Or it just never comes on - ill check!!

Its the latteral abs sensor.......... lost the code I had. Will try and get it re-done. but nope, no warnings.

Yer not fussed about the switch not lighting up, thats an easy fix. Just to get the esp working on and off would be nice.

up date, iv just put a new maf on, light is still on, not driven it yet though as im at work, how long should i give it untill it turns off? also if any one has a scanner or vagcom or thing on there phone to mesure the maf readigs what should they be around at tick over, and should they fluctuate much?
mine was running 4.0 gs but every now and then drop to 3.8 gs, on the old maf it would go 4.1 and drop to 3.2-3.0 and would see revs drop too....

Ok not happy now, spoke to the garage and a new steering angle sensor is 200 quid and a 100 to fit it!!!

There may be a chance it can be cleaned and it will work, but there is no point in spending a 100 to check the old one if im not going to spend another 200 if its buggered!!

Not sure what to do now

my light went off after 10 mins of driving, got limp a couple of times and then the light went out and no limp, however i vag comd it last night to clear all the codes and iv started getting limp again every so often :wtf:[:@] im wound up now, gonna try the battery disconnect and if that doesnt work i think its the boost thats giving me limp so im gonna get the map checked

i dis conned the bat as light didnt go out and the car seemed a little hesertant on the m40, felt like it was being choaked every now and then.
changed back to my 3bar FPR and took it out for a booting and oddly seemed a lot better

as for steering sensor, do you mean the slip ring behind the steering wheel?? Ebay it there about 12-30 quid on there can find them new around 50 i thinks...

Oooh not really sure, when the guy at the garage did the fault find it kept coming up with the steering angle sensor fault. Spoke to him and he said it was about 2 hours labour and was on the steering rack, thats all I know.

What should I do to try and narrow down the fault??
