I've got about 2 miles from home until I hit a nice A road, so I'll drive her gently until then and it should be at normal temperature by the time I get onto the A road. Then I'll hold it @ 2200rpm the whole way to work

A video of using Vag com for the forced rgegen? If so if you just follow Ash101's guide (post #11) on page 1, you can't go wrong.
Right, cleared my DPF completely last night.
Started everything up and the DPF was @ 34.4%. Took a slow drive along to warm the car up and within 5 minutes the car had put itself into a forced regen - xxxxxx1x
Carried on driving and hit the A road where I tested driving @ 2200rpm in 3rd & 4th gears. The DPF% dropped rapidly from the 34% to around 8-10% within about 6 minutes of steady revs. Noticed the exhaust temperature was at a bubbly 660 degrees :O
When it hit the 8-10% mark (could have been higher as I wasn't looking) the forced regen turned itself off. I carried on driving @ the same revs and the % still dropped, albeit at a slower rate (about 0.1% every few seconds)
By the time I had got to work (12 mile) the DPF % had gone down to 3.4%
On the way home I done exactly the same revs but in 4th & 5th gear to see how low it would go, and it carried on dropping. About a mile from home the DPF % showed 0.0%
Brilliant. Will be using this from now on & checking the levels everynow and then. But it's good to know that driving in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear @ 2000-2200rpms will clear the DPF quite efficiently itself.

I took a brave pill tonight and decided to give this a go! Got my level down from 34% to 0%.
Here is what I did:
1) Checked #4 of measurement block 2 to verify the coolant temp was above 50'c - it was.
2) Checked #3 of MB 75 to ensure soot level below 75% - it was
3) Turned on the headlights, screen blower, rear window heater, radio - dunno why but the guide says to do so.
4) Entered the code in the coding window. This caused the DPF light to come on
5) Drove at about 2K revs in 4th back and forth along a country road keeping an eye on the soot level (prolly useful to have someone do this for you).
It was as easy as that! Just a couple of points, the guide says up to 37mph in 4th gear and between 1.5 and 2.5k revs but on an FR 2k revs is about 45mph, so I went off the revs rather than the speed.
Also, ensure it's not all downhill because your engine doesn't get put under any load and the gases won't get hot enough. You can see this from #1 of MB 75. Mine was around 750/800 when under normal load!!
I noticed that the bin bits showing the regen status flipped to show "normal regen" after a while, however the DPF light on the dash stayed on. When it reached 0 the light went off and I just stopped the car, ignition off, disconnected the cable/laptop and then started up and off home! Car certainly feels nice and smooth!
I once had an emergency regen done under warranty at the dealers and if I remember correctly I saw quite an increase in economy for the first few weeks afterwards! I don't know if that will be cancelled out by burning a load of fuel for the regen but I think if it makes my car run nice and smooth then it's definitely something worth doing once every few months.
My only worry would be that doing it a lot would cause wear on the DPF and maybe shorten its lifespan. Maybe someone on here can confirm or dismiss this?

@ Dev null - Would you have needed to force the regen via vag com or was it just a try out? My DPF levels were also @ 34% yet mine went into regen last night by its own (I never entered the code into Vag com) and only took a matter of minutes to clear, although it did only get down to around 8% mark and the rest I done myself.
The car is definitely alot smoother now and is alot more responsive in 1st & 2nd gears when low in the revs.

I don't think it needed it, I just fancied trying it out. I think I have an issue with the DPF regenning when it shouldn't anyway, I've seen it do it at around 23% through vagcom!!
I have a long drive tomorrow which is a mix of motorway and A-roads so will be interesting to see what the values are like after it when I get home.

Nice to hear just hope my first MOT (2011) Happens before they bring these DPF rules in if they do

@ Chan & Andrew B - Which DPF route did you go down? Have you had any issues at all?
There is a cracking GB that I'm in at the moment (waiting for 1 more taker) with a well known tuner and former sponsor from here, for an excellent £650, but I'm sort of in two minds about it doing it now that I have the DPF sussed out.

Yeah I was just checking your build thread and read about that. Is it quite a noticible jerky stutter or something you can live with and does it happen often?
I think I've had a few minor stutters before, but think that was more a DPF issue as I'm just running a remap?

Had a check with vag com tonight, soot was 8% so didn't bother trying a forced regen this time! Will check next time I feel the 'normal' regen kick in for interest. Did find logs for pdf and exhaust sensor faults when scanned though?, implausible signals? Cleared ok, again will check these in a bit! Thanks again for all the guidance lads, what a forum!

I would have potentially been interested in the group buy they have going, but the few issues arising for certain people and the fact that they are some 5 or 6 hours drive away from me puts me off a bit!

Yes I agree with your concerns, although I think I could suffer a bit of stuttering more than living with the DPF on a daily basis still
Andrew - Is the map you have the more aggressive performance map (wild)? Just wondering if there would be less stuttering issues with the milder map?

On a side note, my DPF was back upto 15% last night whilst doing exactly the same type of driving that cleared it in the first place? I thought the regen would kick in regardless of the DPF levels having to be over a cerain amount

Not had chance to check mine again yet - I will do it tonight. FinGerS o FuDgE - that seems strange that it goes from zero to 15% so quickly! Unless they do get full quickly but are meant to burn off quckly as well.
Would be very interested in getting some hard facts from somewhere as to when exactly the DPF regen stages should kick in. I found something a while back but it doesn't seem to natch what actually happens - it suggested stage 1 at 45% however I have seen mine doing it at 25%!!
