Hi. The recommended tyre size for the Cupra is apparently 215/40 17.

I am having a hard time getting hold of the tyres i want in 215/40 17 but can get them in 205/40 17.

Will these be ok?

Thanks in advance

Hi Spawney. There's a table in 'xxx.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/tyre-size-for-rim-width_topic60146.html' that show the min/max tyre sizes that will fit a given wheelrim. I can guess that a 205 will fit your wheelrim without a problem, however you will be reducing the diameter of the wheel (the '40' is a %age of the tyre width, which you are reducing) , reducing the ride height by 4mm and putting the speedo out a little (overread marginally).
I don't think you will notice any real difference with handling - and it is winter now so when(?!) it snows it's considered narrower tyres are better (not that 1cm will make much difference...).
Have a look at tyres-pneus-online.co.uk - they may have what you're looking for and are well priced even after adding the fitting price at your local fitter.

The problem with different sized wheels is normally if you have the smaller/worn ones on the rear I understand (saw somewhere that you should always put new tyres on the back and move the worn/old ones to the front to stop the auto systems getting confused - assuming they're all the same size!). Even so, it would be best to have the same size all round so there's no difference in rolling circumference - that way all the wheels will indicate that they are going the same speed.

I think that with 225 on the rear and 215 on the front that is why the ABS is happy. PS having 225 on the rear increases the ride-height on the rear by 4.5mm - so not much anyway.

I think the puncture sensor also works on wheel speed - assumes the a wheel running faster means it's under inflated/punctured.
