Upgraded Sidemount Intercooler

Not always the case. A custom Pipework and bit of fabrication can overcome this. But it I's possible if you really wanted to keep them. Push the rad back to allow more space I's a good starting point. I'm gonna look into doing this as I don't wanna chop up the bumper even tho I use a foglight hole for a cold air source.

Does anyone have pics of the routing to keep the fogs? I'm a mechanical fitter so a bit of modifying to the kit is no big deal. Even if I could just get the plastic cover and lense on without the the actual foglight behind it.

1. The core size is 190x210x126mm, which gives a volume slightly above 5 liters for the core. As each end has about 1 liter, this gives a 7 liter SMIC, which is very good for a standard or chipped K03-052.

2. The only size above (and maximum possible size for a Leon Mk 1 SMIC) is the BoostFactory SMIC, which has a total volume about 8 liters, out of which the core is in the 6-liter range. On my Stage 2 Leon, the BoostFactory SMIC provides very good cooling even in the hottest summer days.

3. Any SMIC which has a 100% aluminium construction and a total volume above 6 liters can provide great cooling without pressure drop of the large "suitcase" FMICs.

Due to the cooler weather here in the UK, most people in only need an SMIC, not a FMIC: unless you're using the car for the track or on hot (?) days with constant abuse, you're never going to get the EGTs to rise that much with a decent uprated SMIC.

The SMIC which gets the best reviews is the Eurojet SMIC.

The Tyrolsport SMIC also gets good reviews, but apparently hangs a bit low, like the Boost Factory SMIC does.

The eBay SMIC is supposed to be 'ok', but doesn't have as good build quality as a Eurojet, i.e. the eBay unit is a cheaper knock-off, which does work, but don't expect top quality like the Eurojet.

The problem is that the best SMICs are American, like the Eurojet, and getting one imported is expensive and people in the UK don't generally know about Eurojet/don't want to spend £££/can't be ar$ed, so that's why this thread has gone onto fitting FMICs!!

Thread was really aimed at fitting any intercooler that will save my poor fog lights. Plenty of food for thought in this thread. Thanks to anyone who took the time to help and fire up some pics.
