Virtual Cockpit Fuel Guage

I have just had a virtual cockpit fitted to a 2017 Leon, and have a issue with the fuel gauge, and range seems to be slightly out.

With the old cluster, the fuel level used to drop in segments and then the single segment used to turn red when the low fuel indicator came on.

Now the segments drop until I get to 2 segments remaining, it then drops straight to a single red segment when the low fuel indicators comes on

Using VCDS I can see Controller 17 Byte 2 has 8 choices for fuel tank type. Mine was set to 2 and I have now tried setting to 3 instead.

Does anyone know what the 8 different choices refer too?

I am hoping to match the capacity of my fuel tank (2.0TDI 150BHP) with one of the choices if possible, failing that I guess the hard way is to try each one in turn.

Not sure if this will help, but when I had my Virtual Cockpit changed to the Rev A unit, it took about 3 maybe 4 full tanks before the range started reading correctly again. Have to admit I'm not sure if the digital gauge was being accurate as I genuinely go off the range not that. As the last red dot suggests 40 miles, but the first white dot (when full) doesn't drop until I've done well over a 100 miles.

Thanks, I have changed Byte 2 back to it's orginal value, and will give it some time as you suggest

That’s not how mine works - Rev A fitted from new.

On FL Cupra - Normally drops from 8/8 to 7/8 after 40-50 miles from tank filled to full (appreciate it depends on how driven). 1/8 white with c.50 miles range to empty, 1/8 red with 35 miles range to empty and flashing 1/8 red with 0 miles range to empty.

On pre-FL FR 150 ps 2.0 TDI with analogue dials wouldn’t drop from 8/8 to 7/8 until 80-100 miles, but at the bottom end would function the same as the Cupra above.

I haven’t scanned the car for a while so had a quick check:

Bit 0-2: 00 Tank Characteristic Curve, Variant 1

Bit 3-6: 38 Vehicle Variant, Variant 7

2.0 TFSI Cupra ST 4Drive 300 ps (55 ltr petrol tank). So you can discount Variant 1.

It's shame that VCDS does not give labels to the Tank Type Byte 2, it just lists Variants 1 to 8 which tells you nothing.

The tank shows full and seems to drop OK as fuels is used, but it will only drop to 2 bars and then will drop to a single red bar.

This seems to me to indicate that the guage is not calibrated properly. I have seen this https://forum.obdeleven.com/thread/6098/fuel-level-sensor-reset

On checking it is at -12.8 which is the factory default.

I was hoping that there is a proceedure to calibrate the cockpit to the fuel sender, but have drawn a blank so far.

This is what I would love to find, but for the Leon instead

I would be very very very grateful if someone with a 2.0TDI could scan Controller 17 Byte 2 and advise what fuel tank variant is set

The fuel gauge has done that one mine for both versions of the VC unit, Original and Rev A. My 280 was very similar too, the first dot wouldn't disappear until at least 100 miles.

Is yours the PPF car? If so wondering if they revised the software for the tank?

Yes one of the first batch of OPF/GPF cars. Without doing a side by side comparison it’s difficult to tell what hardware/software is different between pre/post OPF cars.

I’ve not had to replace the VC, so wasn’t even sure if the led fuel and temperature gauges were separate items from the VC binnacle.

I did have to do it, just wanted the central Rev Counter, and sold my original so wasn't the full £700 (now more like £800) coming out of my pocket.

But the digital temp and fuel gauges are all part of the VC. I generally just use the range (and the line/circle that surrounds it)as the actual gauge.

Since having the virtual cockpit fitted I have now found I have some faults with Instruments and CAN Gateway that I can't clear using VCDS, it reports that I need the Pro version - I am using a Ross Tech Micro-CAN lead. I also have a similar fault with the retrofitted reversing camera (High with moveable guideines) I guess these are because the retrofit's are for equipment that was not available for my car at time of construction? For example my car was built June 2017 and registered Oct 2017, and I don't think that the cockpits started to be fitted until the 2018 year + I understand that the factory reversing cameras are Low versions with fixed guide lines. So I wonder perhaps that the fuel guage is not working 100% correctly due to a software / hardware incompatibility? I have checked the fuel sender calibration and it's is set to the factory default. I have updated VCDS to the latest version with the hope that the fuel tank variants are now labelled, however they are still liisted as Types 1 to 8

You should not have errors on any retrofits

Whoever has coded them has done it incorrectly. None of the instrument clusters we retrofit even to very early models have any error codes

The camera fault will be because it has not been calibrated so will state "no basic settings"

Yes I am not impressed, problem is that after they have done their work no faults were shown on the instrument cluster and I have accepted the car, it's only later when I have scanned using VCDS that I have found them. Is this something that you can investigate for me, I am tempted to bring the car to you to have ACC fitted as I only have standard cruise control at present. I am down in Essex so it's long a trip up to you.

Yes we'd be happy to investigate for you. We've just had another customer from essex for ACC, his drive home was much more comfortable :)

I did exactly the same, I mean, changed the original VC to Rev A unit and range went crazy.
I was already thinking that it would correct itself at the next refuel anyway, but the possibility of it staying like that because of an incompatibility or something like that worried me.

Later found this thread and @Damo H 's post made me feel better :)

Hi @Damo H

I have a question for you, since we both made the same retrofit.

With the original VC, I had the option of choosing G-meter on the instrument cluster settings (from the infotainment screen), to place it at the center of the dials, and save this preference in one of the two (three on some units) available sub-views.

After I replaced it with Rev A unit, there's no G-meter among the options anymore. There's no problem on Sport HMI, I still can see the G-meter there, as before. Also, all of the other options are still available.

Just to be clear, I attached the photo of the related infotainment screen.

What is the case with your setup?
Was the G-meter option available before, is it still available?

I can't recall as never used it, and not had the car over 18 months now.

However I did have more views than in your screen. I had Classic and 3 personalised view options. I remember that as I had 3 of my own setups for different circumstances that I used regularly. So looks like something is up already.

Thanks for your response. I was hopeful to get some pointers 'cause there are not many people who did the same retrofit. Anyway, I'll keep looking :)

As for the personalised views, I asked around and it looks like the number of those is dependent on the infotainment unit version. Some lower models have two, others have three and an Auto setting also.
