weird suspension problem

Hi all,

Apologies if this gets a bit wordy but I'm looking for a bit of advice to try and diagnose a strange stability issue. My car is a Leon Cupra 300 manual (2018, 44k miles). I've had the car a couple months after previously coming from a 7.5 GTI. Initially the car seemed fine, however now there's a very weird suspension issue I just can't get to the bottom of. It is quite hard to explain but it's essentially a road holding/stability issue. The car doesn't feel planted on the road and wants to wander around, but not in the way you get with misalignment (pulling to either side), it just sort of gets taken around the road with the bumps, like bump steer basically. It also feels like the body of the car isn't being kept flat when you accelerate hard, definitely not what you would expect from a car like this, completely different from my gti which is obviously the same chassis. It's manageable around town but at motorway speeds it is awful (wandering about the lane, bobbling around etc). I took it to my local VW specialist who have always been great so I trust their work, we replaced the front two DCC shocks with genuine seat ones, top mounts and bearings, rear trailing arms as there was a bit of play in the bearings and new front superpro control arms with polybushes. Also had a 4 wheel alignment and checked the wheels and tyres which are fine. This hasn't really solved the issue, the car rebounds a bit better due to the new shocks and the steering is a bit tighter from the polybushes but something really isn't right.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with problems like this or any ideas on what to look at/replace? The only ideas I've got now really are something to do with the subframe or maybe the steering rack, just really at a loss, would rather not as I love the car and the engine is awesome but I'll have to part-ex it soon as it's not really practical to have a car that can't go on the motorway. Would really appreciate any ideas, cheers.

I recently changed my rear dampers - which gave me weird handling issues, sort of weird yaw/roll moment in corners, and unstable feeling.
5 years old and 44k miles doesn't see very long to be having to change dampers and suspension though!
For reference my ST is 8 years old and 111k miles and both rear dampers were knackered.

Are the tyres decent condition/make?

Hi mate, yeah it is a weird one, I did think mileage was a bit low for suspension wear but with the amount of potholes around and 19 inch wheels I suppose they take quite a lot of impact. Interesting about the rear dampers, think mine are okay but the fronts were weeping, not excessively though.

Tyres are okay, kumho ecstas on the front and continentals on the rear, fair amount of tread left all round, I did rotate them as well and it made no difference to the way the car drives so pretty confident it isn't a tyre issue. Would like a set of ps4s but not sure I can justify the £700 outlay for a set :ROFLMAO:

Essentially yes, same instability there just more firmly dampened in sport/Cupra. There’s quite a lot of creaking over broken up roads and speed bumps so I think the subframe bolts are the next to look at. Losing my will to live now 🤣

What you could try is swapping the wheels front to back and see if the issue changes. That might rule out a tyre/wheel problem.

Nowhere near as bad but i had an issue with a car not wanting to pull up straight when you braked hard. Thought it was the car. Changed the tyres to a different brand and the problem went away.
