My Mates mk2 blew its engine today whilst cruising along on the daily commute. he heard a bang, clunk and pulled over, oil all over the road. mechanics had a quick look and said there was a big hole in the bottomof engine and that the engine had blown up..... he's wondering is this common or a known fault / any relevant recalls etc. he just bought it 3 months ago, 2nd hand. company car, 88 k miles. needs a new engine now, ffs.

any thoughts?

If this was a common problem, VAG would be out of business by now :)
I can't even imagine a hole being blown in the bottom. That takes some severe crazy engine eff-up. Even if you think about all the stuff in the bottom of the engine, can't imagine any of it punching a hole through the sump

What engine was it mate ? Petrol / diesel ? Modded ?

Ive seen a conrod smash through a engine block before but that was on a high powered evo !! Never heard of this on any vag cars before .

Its possibly a broken con rod. These can go through the block...we have a 12 litre v6 mercedes truck sitting in our yard with the same problem, requiring a new engine at £12k!!

Fitting isnt hard and £400 for all that I would say is a bit over the top. Spoiler £100ish Skirts £100ish and Mirror caps around £60ish so your paying around £140ish fitting. Depends on their job and time taken really. If they spend good time doing it and letting the paint cure properly then its better than paying for a shoddy job

Car would be in over night inside for glue to cure (12hrs) and as the car is parked on the road so would be very dodgy and for painting i would take parts in and get them fitted a day or two later

got a price today to have the diffuser painted. one thing we noticed in the actual day light the NEW seat part and the diffuser are very close match. so going to put it together and fit it. see what it looks like in the sun.

then get it painted if need me.

just need a guide to fit the seat part to the car. :D

Picked up a new set of pads and discs yesterday!!! Can't believe how damn heavy the front discs are!! Result on price too, stealer orignally quoted £460 and I ended up getting them for £272 after a bit of research into costs on here. Still pretty angry tho, why quote so much in the first place?
