That's the Anti-Shudder Valve, it stays open until you switch the engine off, then it blocks air flow so the engine comes to a smoother halt.

It's right next to the EGR valve, in the same housing, but is controlled by a different arm and vacuum pipe to the rear of the housing. If you pop the engine cover off, run the engine, then switch off the engine and keep looking (by operating the key at arm's length through an open door window) you'll see the arm actuate, and stay actuated for a second or two after the engine stops until the vacuum supply disappears.
Don't try pulling the vacuum pipe to the ASV off, as I'm told you'll quite likely break the plastic nipple it connects to.

The EGR controls the flow of exhaust gas into the inlet, which is through a small metal connecting pipe at the bottom of that housing. However, you won't actually see anything happen on the outside when the EGR is operating, unlike the ASV.

i have a problem i blocked the small pipe that attaches to the top left of the EGR valve with a 1/2" nail, but when i drove it last night all i really found is i lost power and My Engine managment light has come on my dash ??????????

HELP :(

Ah yes I think that can happen on later ECUs if you block the pipe off. Earlier ones (my 03 was OK) didn't throw a fault.

You shouldn't lose power though, unless you've gone into limp mode - didn't think EGR faults caused limp mode though.

You sure you've reassembled all the big pipes correctly, if you don't push them together firmly then refit the horseshoe clip, they will blow apart under boost and throw a fault.
Can you hear any hissing when you try and accelerate, or lots of smoke ?

as i say i put the nail in the small pipe coming out of top left of the EGR and did chech by the valve i pictured, after 70 miles last night i took this pipe off and checked again it was caked with black soot :( so i cleaned it and all ok?

i have removed the nail for now hopeing the fault light might rectifie itself but not to sure??
any advise?

me too, exct same. just took out nail. back to stock again. Cleared fault using vag com.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if the fault doesn't recur after so many startups the fault light will clear ? think it's quite a few though (40 odd springs to mind, but I don't know why!).

that's why I advised to leave 1/8" of nail to remove, I don't think it's 40+ restarts but more like a dozen, (guessing) It looks like the newer ECU's don't like this trick, see recent threads from Devonutopia re egr. Should have mentioned the main air pipe (rubber elbow/to egr)as it was clearly removed for the pic, it's a good idea to replace the spring clip each time you replace a connection, as Muddy says they are prone to blowing open, lost pressure and cel light, note there are at least 3 different size and types on the system, appprox £1 each get some in stock if you plan to do anymore mods :)

the fault light has cleared itself :D so all is good now, thanks all ;)

vag com can only reduce it to the min, not turn off completly.

Smee - VAG stands for Volkswagen AG which is the german term for a company, so like Mercedes AG also.

moditsteve - yes that seems fine.
Errrrmmm.... :headhurt:

Think it is Volkswage Audi Group actually Dooda...

...and VAG-COM is a way of viewing/editting/recording data from the cars internal electrics using its OBD port (OBD = On-Board Diagnostics)

Its technically Volkswagenwerk Aktiengesellschaft (shortened to VAG), or Volkswagen Group in English. Even though it can be interpreted as Volkswagen Audi Group, but its not the correct one.

People use the term VAG generally to refer to cars made by VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda.

For those new to the wonder that is VAG-COM, there's more on RossTech's site here:
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/index.html
And of course, our very own vag-com forum here:
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=104

I think it's fair to say, the most useful tool you can own if you own a VAG group car !

Vag-com isn't that much use on my G40 or aircooled ;p what do you change on the EGR with vag-com to set it to minimum?
