got 45mpg this afternoon

70, but i was putting some squirt on in the third lane at times

TBH, no matter how I look at it, it still saving me £40-50 a month, I was getting 32mpg before I bought me beeza

Im finding the mpg worse on the Leon FR TDI than I did on the Ibiza FR TDI.

It's a heavier car with a more powerful engine, so you'd expect the fuel economy to be worse. However, I would think the range would remain relatively similar due to the increase in fuel tank size i.e. 55l in the Leon and 45l in the Ibiza.

Good news. I drove home today , which around 100 miles up the M1. I set the cruise control at 70 for most of the way and got it to between 50-51mpg. Mork you are right in saying that there is a big difference between mpg at 80 and at 70. I reckon there can be up to 10mpg difference as when I cruise at 80 I get low 40s. This is on ultimate aswell.

That can depend on the car -- my Passat is actually MORE economical cruising at 2600 - 2700rpm in 6th (80 - 85mph) than at 70mph! I will just get 50mpg at 70mph, but will get 55+mpg at 80 .....

Around 2600rpm is a "sweet spot" on my engine ....

Quite surprised last night, sat at a steady 80mph and the instant read-out was 53 mpg!
At 70mph it was reading over 60 mpg.
Any movement in the throttle at all and the mpg dropped way down...

This almost makes me feel better about getting 42mpg average on the way home from work yesterday.... in the 1.8T

better side of 55 in the colt tho.
and sub 30 in the 1.6 van.... I think I work that harder though

Make of this what you will:

Trip - Worthing to Brentwood Essex (and vice versa)

Route - A24 (Several sections 60mph and 9 roundabouts), M23, M25, A12 (and reverse direction)

Distance - ~85miles each direction

Fuel - Shell (80mph average run) and Tesco (70mph average run - had to fill up for journey back and no Shell near my parents)

Additive - Millers Diesel Power Plus (2.5 Caps full per tank)

Weight - Not sure of exact weight but equivilant weight on both journeys so not a variable. Its a bootful though so a fair bit!

Tyre Pressure - 35 front and 38 rear (lots of weight)

80MPH Run - Average Trip Comp 1 - 53.4MPG | Trip Comp 2 - 49.1MPG (Average over the last 1200 miles since reset)

70MPH Run - Average Trip Comp 1 - 53.8MPG | Trip Comp 2 - 49.5MPG (Average over the last 1200 miles since reset)

Driving style - Not mashed pedal acceleration but medium speed acceleration, letting off and changing down rather than braking and use brakes lightly.

From my perspective Shell and Millers are a winner (smoother, less smoke and touch better mid range) as am able to do within 0.4MPG but at 10mph more! Will try when I can do it with Shell as well. I think an average of 55MPG or thereabouts on Shell/Millers/70MPH combo.

Did 400 miles today. Got 54mpg up to Birmingham at a steady 80mph - around 180 miles - to Spaghetti Junction area. Then with Dad in the passenger seat (he was selling a car up there) the overall trip mpg went down to about 51mpg, doing a steady 85+ mph on cruise control - weather was much better heading back south.

Very happy with the journey and the economy, and the trip counter read just short of 500 miles when I tanked up again, with 15 miles showing on the range. Not bad from a 45 litre tank, and a 70+++mph journey.

Hi, sorry if im telling you somthing you already know, did anyone see that top gear with clarkson and fuel economy? A little while ago i think. They put it down to the back rear heater as the biggest strain on economy. Also air conditioning and climate control. Big differences I recall. Try using it untill clear and turning them off. See how you get along.

Instantaneous readout in my Passat PD130 at 80mph in 6th (2550rpm) is 55 - 60mpg.

On a m-way run of more than 20 miles, cruising at 80-ish, I will always get 52-55mpg on the computer for the trip (depending on wind etc) which is a real 50mpg.
How do you manage that Craig
As you know I also have a PD130 Passat, but both pre- and post-remap at a steady 80mph I get around 10mpg less than you :(

I did a run to work today @ 55mpg. That was piddling around between 65-75 mph tops, and even then, very short 75mph.

Weather was crap though.

@ Muddy: I don't do anything special, it's always given me that mpg since I got it .... I know the trip computer is 5-6% optimistic but reasonably accurate.

Could the estate be less aerodynamic than the saloon? I know the saloon has a surprisingly low Cd.

Also, is the gearing different in the estate? On mine, 2600rpm = 81mph in 6th. 5th is 25mph / 1000rpm and 4th about 22mph / 1000rpm.

Rather annoying, bought my baby on friday, but averaged 37mpg so far, tis pulling a bit to the left so will check the tyres today.

Damn sexy car though, a bit better than my 306 diesel.

Now do it over a full tank and see your trip improve. I've done 670 without venting before. Then brim it again and calculate your MPG manually.

The onboard computer in my TDI 110 (-ish) at 80mph running Shell/Millers mix gives me between 53-56mpg depending on the road conditions. Had roughly the same figures on BP Ultimate before they changed the formula (28 extra miles per tank....), been on Shell since due to cost reasons.

I also find better fuel economy driving at 80mph, than I do at 70mph.

Goot :)

Why would venting help my mpg? Surely it would just increase my miles per tank.

Been driving like my nan for 2 days now and only managed circa 42-45mpg. Maybe I have bought a donut.

Its done 23k.

I guess mine is so bad because my trip to work is 14 miles, A roads (40-80). It must take 4 miles for the car to warm up properly. I bet the 45mpg+ clan are motorway drivers???

Andy, do you only drive downhill, with the wind behind you, and in neutral? Whats your secret? Strictly below 2k rpm?
