chris will probably tell you castrol edge 5-30w thats what he told me a while back, when i went votex though for a service they put 10-40w in so i'm gona go with that for a while. votex told me the 5-30w was for long life intervals? i think this is generally a bit of a grey area, down to personal prefference like!;)

well, everybody can tell me what they want. But if someone really can PROVE and document that Mobile 1 is not approved for my auto liebe, then I have to give Mobile a call.

Sorry for any confussion I may have caused.

VW oils are indeed backwards compatible, so the Mobil 1 0w/40 is VW505.00 approved, which means its backwards compatible with VW504.00 (LCR calls for 504.00/507.00)

A 0w/40 will indeed benefit a Swedish user as the average ambient tempeature is lower than that of the UK. So a 0w grade oil will pump better and will crank easier.

If however you want the best for your engine then I really do recommend a 504.00/507.00 spec oil, the amount of money/time/hours that goes into developing a new approved oil is crazy. Believe me if VW didn't think there was any real benefit to bringing out a new oil then they wouldnt waste time/money on R&D's for new oils.

I DO want the very best for my engine, that's why I use Mobile 1

Sounds like an add doesn't it? ;)

Can't go wrong with Mobil 1 - designer base package. The best you can buy.

Millers still aint far away under a Fourier Transform Infa-Red. ;) Not bad for a small family run buisiness. Add? What add? lol

too many specs of oil

While I was at work today, thought I would check to see what oil is listed for Leon Cupra's & Cupra R's (I work at a motor factors) , according to Castrol , Morris oils & Comma all are listing a fully synthetic 5w30 oil, according to my owners manual & service book it lists either 0w40 , 5w30 , 5w40 or 10w40 & VW specs of 503 00 , 500 00 , 505 01 or API-SH or ACEA A2 or A3.

I Think as long as it is a good quality synthetic oil or even a semi synthetic oil you will be ok.

Just dont use a cheap 20w50 grade as that would be too thick & probably blow your engine up.

Something that unfortunately doesn't stand out as a difference when standing in halfords looking at the oils trying to work out why castrol is 5 times the price of another for the 'same' stuff.

Motor oil companies should give more tours around their plants so people can see just how much does go in to them

The cheapest I have found Castrol Edge 5w-30 is a deal on the internet where you can buy 16 litres at £9.32 a litre free delivery. Yes its a lot of oil but the way this thread has grown, you would think there are a lot of people out there intending to keep their Leons for many years and many many miles!

Apparently you can also get it from Costco at 3 litres for £20 but not everyone can shop there or have one hear them. I dont think this is bad considering my last car (Mondeo TDCI) took 6 litres of castrol oil costing £11.25 a litre.

Yes, like Lubrizols engine testing department or Millbrooks proving ground test blocks.

Unfortunately these places are very top secret, I went to Millbrook last week to drop a car off and the guy met me in the car park outside and quickly shuffled me away from the massive army tanks they were testing at the time - they might aswel of blind folded me.
