What OIL should you use in an LCR MK1?

I'm using Edge right now and it appears to good stuff but I guess I'll be able to tell just how good it's been when I drain it in 6mths, I've used Mobile 1 up until this point and that has my vote every time, it was just that I got the Edge for £20 cheaper this time round.

Ive always used castrol edge for top ups but not sure whats been used in oil changes.

Question, if i use mobil 1 for the full change, can i use castrol edge for top ups?

I can't say for certain but I'd imagine that any good 5w30 FULLY synthetic will be good for top ups as it's all the same grade (Millers, Mobil, Castol Edge, Fuchs). In this case, two good brands like Castrol Edge & Mobil should perform about the same but I wouldn't mix say, Halfords, Castrol normal fully synthetic or any other 'normal'/cheaper FS oils with Mobil because I don't believe that these offer the same protection so you'd essentially be taking away protection from your engine when compared to topping up with a better brand.

cheers, picking up the mobil 1 after work today, swayed to that as opposed to castrol edge due the to litres i need for a full service. (mobil comes in 5 litres bottle)

Hi All,

An interesting read, this is slightly off the point, but wanted to know what your thoughts were as i was looking at topping up or maybe changing the oil not sure!

Basically after an oil change + filter 5K miles ago, tonight I changing a drop link on drivers side and noticed an oil leak mark on drive shaft and looks like its coming down the cam belt side back corner of the block. Have checked up top and the back corner seems a little wet oilish. So am thinking rocker cover gasket.

I don't think it can much else on that side as it had cambelt, tensioner, water pump (metal impeller) etc only 5K ago and everything dry as a bone then.

It's definitely above sump level as I can see wet oil mark on the block dissappearing up as far as i can see with a lamp.

Have checked oil level and when I oil changed last it was up to Max and has dropped to 2 marks off minimum.

Firstly whats your thoughts on the leak, are there any other known places it can be here, i.e. oil pump shaft seal etc? not sure about this only it used to be the norm on my last renault!

I'm currently running with this:
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60219-millers-oils-cfs-5w-40-competition-full-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

But was thinking about either this but not sure of the difference;

http://www.a1motorstores.co.uk/cata...7/XFS_5w40_Oil_-_Petrol_5_Litre_(5484GG).html

or complete change to this:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...165581_langId_-1?cm_vc=IOV4PDPZ1&iozone=PDPz1

5000Miles i guess can't go wrong changing it early, but any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated. was thinking if i did change it fully again, i might have the sump off and check the pickup while i was at it! would this need a new sump gasket if i did?

It's an LCR 05 (BAM) 48218K

Thanks

In my last 2 previous cars a 306 gti6 & mk2 clio 172 I used thick diesel oil for every service I did got it free from work lol. Both cars ran fine my 306gti6 had 120000 miles when I sold it. Using edge for my LCR tho :)

Been running Castrol Edge 5W30 since I got my LCR 18months ago based on the replies to this thread and its been fine. However, I see that my local Costco are doing the Castrol Edge 5W40 for £23 per 4ltr so I'm tempted to give that a try. Will this be ok? The 5w30 bottles actually states 'meets VW/Audi latests specs, etc, etc' whereas the 5w40 does not so I'm a bit weary whether I should give it a try.

I got this on my last service but I mixed it with the 5w30 I got last time from Costco.
However I wish I'd bough more of it. It was 3ltrs for £11.50  I bought 12 litres and soon run out.. It runs fine but I'm not sure if running purely 5w40 is recommended or not.

oil type

I would go with a 0-40w synth... and they have suggested to go with the larger oil filter...
