My last car was a Lupo GTI. And in my opinion the Lupo is a better car than a cupra if both cars are in standard trim.

I would have my Lupo back toomorrow, but i wouldn't have it instead of my Ibiza.

But one of the main reasons i got rid was the lack of tuning potential.

Get yourself a MK3 Cupra and getting modding. You wont look back.
 
For starters, much better build quality, better handling, equally as quick (standard). rarer.

It just felt better.

Plus i bought mine from the Director of Topgear magazine, it was his own car, so must say something about them.

Dont get me wrong i wouldn't go back to one now from my ibiza, but the Lupo's are very very good.

well btt - I 'was' going to buy a lupo gti originally back in 2001, and ended up with an ibiza cupra.

lupo gti was very dissapointing in that it was in desperate need of more damned power and torque. Gutless in OE trim, which needed its neck ringing but not at any rpm did it feel like it wanted to go. Handling was ok, but not fantastic, but comparible to a std ibiza I would say it was slightly better sorted.
Also tried the polo gti (same engine as lupo gti) but this was worse than lupo.

Went on to get the cupra, fell in love with the 1.8t motor instantly and the spanish flair, and much better (new) value for money.

now the models are older now... lupo gti has more appeal as its a rarer car, looks better and if out and out performance is'nt your thing.........
 
if you are worried about fuel consumption then don't even think about a cupra.

had mine on the emissions tester and it was showing a perfect 1.01 which is as near as is humanly perfect to get it. that means i don't think it's overfuelling, and i get shite fuel cosumption.

when just chipped (from new in my case) it cruised at a 35mpg level, higher if travelling within speed limits.

That seems fair enough.

I still cant believe the GTI is as quick as the cupra.
 
i had a lupo gti before my cupra and there is no way the lupo gti is as quick as a cupra, especially once on the move at any decent speed.
 
i struggle to believe this also.
156bhp cupra with torque vs lupo 1600gti, 125bhp andf shag all torque...

in gear its no contest, but maybe off the line, 0-60 dash from the lighter lupo gti its closer.
 
You said you were unsure which mk, the mk4 cupra has 180bhp and handles a lot better (so i've read anyway). Likewise if you bought a mk3 cupra R, 180bhp with brembos and suspension differences. Just to throw that in there...
 
just bear in mind in standard form they are completly different car than a tuned form

everything you read on sites like that would be correct for standard trim
 
a tuned cupra is an expensive car to run for everyday driving if you have a heavy right foot, my K03s ibiza (256bhp) averages between 19-22mpg with mixed driving. it can be very good on fuel if kept off boost, but what's the point in that :) also, they eat tyres with extra power.
