Lights: MOT Test Checks Description

The headlamps are checked for alignment with a Beam Setter. After first aligning the equipment with the vehicle, the left and right headlamp beams are checked to ensure they are correctly set so as not to dazzle other road users.
*
All required lights are checked for:
*
operation
condition
security
*
Side lights and headlamps
*
are the correct type and colour
dip and aim.
*
Stop lights, indicators and hazard lights*
*
are the correct type and colour
do not interfere with each other in operation
driver's tell-tale works with respect to indicators, or there is an audible warning system.
*
Rear Fog lamps**
*
must be fitted to the centre or offside of the vehicle
tell-tale must work
must not be affected by other lamps and not be obscured
must be red.
*
Number plate lamps
*
All lamps fitted must be working.
*
Rear reflectors
*
There must be two red reflectors fitted reasonably symmetrically, securely attached and not obscured.
*
* Must be fitted to all vehicles first used on or after 1st April 1986, but if fitted, must be Tested.
** Must be fitted to all vehicles first used on or after 1st April 1980.
*
Lights Update (2011-12)
Headlamp cleaning and self-levelling to be assessed
Products on lens that reduce light output.
Inside car
Front and rear lights single operation
main beam warning light

*just to put a stop to all this bickering lol ;)

EDIT :- as you can see if your car isn't fitted with cleaning or self levelling then this is not tested. an MOT tester could fail it by saying that it emits an incorrect colour? however this would be arguable as there is no way of testing the colour temperature, so unless you had 12k or something stupid like that I think you would be ok. the only requirement then is that your headlamps emits the light within adjustable parameters and that it does not 'scatter' and dazzle other road users. also note the 'products on lens that reduces light output' so those of you with flyeye mesh etc might fall foul of current regulations :D

hope this helps anyhows

There illegal, end of, unless they are self levelling, have washer jets etc...
Basically get them, not only because they look good, but I feel a damn site safer using them than standard bulbs in terms of vision. Stick your standard bulbs in for MOT. Takes 2 minutes to swap over.
From experience I can tell you that it is VERY unlikely a copper will do you for having HIDs. It just isn't worth their time/paperwork.

Lol they are not illegal.

If they do not glare, are not a stupid color (8k max will generally pass) then they are legal and will pass an mot.

You do not need washers and levellers, but if they are present they must be tested and working.

If they were illegal they'd be an mot fail unless factory fitted with washers and levellers.

Ok thanks for people's import!

Well I would be fitting the H7R ones, most likely slim ballast, either 4300k or 500k, want as close to OEM as possible but not the yellow halogen colour.

So best place to buy and kit? Looking around £40
Thanks
Luke

Do you get 5k? Pretty sure its 4300k , 6k, 8k, 12k and so on

4300k is closest to OEM, 6k though is just nice and white

Personally i'd get 6k

£40 is a bit cheap as well £60/70 + for a set that might actually last more than a few months.

I really cannot see what all the excitement is about HIDs anyway....surely the car manufacturer has spent millions on testing the bulbs they fit in there cars before releasing them into manufacture....then some noob fits super bright bulbs incorrectly and yes, he might be able to see brilliantly, but the oncoming traffic can see bugger all...i have been dazzled numerous times by idiots who think they know better than multi-million/billion pound companies. I have never bought a car and thought 'i cant see with these headlights'...

correctly set up hid kits are worlds apart from halogen, Ive covered 175k miles in 3.5 years as a mobile engineer & they're a godsend, less ocular straining, better visibility, better durability, & physically safer,

honda fitted HID's in the early 90's to production cars, the renault laguna had them fitted without levelers or washers from factory,

plus I see more incorrectly set up halogen bulb-ed cars than HID fitted cars.

They shouldn't pass an MOT, but sometimes do.
Over here in NI, they seem to be strict with these new rules. I've heard of people with jap import Evo's etc that have factory fitted xenons but no headlight washers, and they've been failed even though they came as standard without washers! So they have to make some sort of temporary washers to get through the MOT.

I've had HID's, and they're not all they're cracked up to be tbh. Yes they are bright and look better/whiter (mine were 5000k), but they aren't that great for increasing visibility. Could have been because mine were H4 hi-lo though, the high beam was awful on them. Beam pattern in general wasn't great, and they weren't a cheap ebay kit.

they are all the same, look at the post sets then look at cheap sets and the bulbs and balasts have the same labels on them, just different printing on the boxes.

Get them as cheap as possible imo if you are going to get them and there is no question they are illegal

6k are nice and white, perfect colour match to white LED sidelights. Also managed to fit the slim balasts inside my headlamps so it looks factory all round
But I did have to put normal bulbs back in for MOT.

Oh yeah and make sure you get H7R so you don't blind everyone :)

Hmmmm, don't want hassle come MOT time. Would get factory colour so 4300-5000k

How do they fit anyway? And how do they get incorrectly fitted with a crap beam pattern?

Thanks
Luke

I have had them installed for about 8 months now and not had any problem. Driven behind the cops and no bother at all!
