I drove like a granny and only went above 70 once or twice and got 54mpg, then drove normally on way back and went down to 47mpg :(

Over 3/4 of a tank so far have only gotten 42mpg, without millers and some heavy driving, most normal, worst i worked out at ~37mpg (have no comp to track it for me). using millers (not in this tank full), it seems to help.

Its worth remembering that there are loads of different factors when it comes to MPG.
Fuel: Different fuels DO give better/worse MPG. Additives can help if the fuel is decent to start with.
Tyres: Differebt size and width of tyres have big effects on MPG. the wider or bigger the tyre, the more surface area on the ground and the more friction for the car to overcome.
Weather: The weather can make a difference. Cars run better on cold damp mornings than hot dry ones.
Driving style:If you hammer the car, it will drink more fuel. If you keep the car in the peak torque range it will drink less. Sticking to top gear in a 40mph zone isn't always the best way to increase MPG.
Distance: If your driving a couple of miles to work and back your MPG will suffer as the car won't warm up very quickly.A longer journey will see better MPG overall.
Age of car: The thing most people forget when buying a diesel is the condition of the engine. It may be brand new, but that means it's tight and still has some loosening off to do before MPG increases. There are lots of figures being thrown around on what milage you car should have loosened up by. I think 20k is somewhere near the start of it.

I have just tipped over 5k so i guess my mog will still increase?

As i am new to TDI's and not really clued up, what is the best way to increase the mpg? i do mainly long distance driving. Also where is the peak torque range ?

makes sense! personally the fuel i can get here i dont think is great, but try get as best i can get! use millers whaich does help. 60mile commute each day and dont hammer all the time, just when have to, car standard other than that, tyres etc. 15k on clock so still loosening.
I think the peak torque is at 1900rpm on the 1.9 PD.

Somewhere between 1700 and 1900 is probably right for peak torque.
You can drive like a granny all day and it will eventully clog things up. Every now and again allow the engine to get warm and give it some hammer from 2nd through to 4th or 5th (depending on if it's safe and the speed limit allows) taking it up to about 4,000rpm before changing. Blows the crap out of the sytem and keeps it running nicely

BPultimate is good, i ESSO normal, just best can get where i am and it is 65p/ltr!! (Euro's to GBP). Do give it a good clearing now and again, also do let it warm up well, help bed all in well too.

i have the 2.0 PD i normally use bp. bp fuel any good?

Everyone on here assumes that whats good for you car is good for theirs. I have tried BP in mine and found it drove harshly, ticked over noisely and lost about 30 miles per quarter of a tank. I now use shell extra and miller diesel sport 4 and it seems to be the winning combo for my car. the only way to find a decent fuel that your car likes is to try them yourself. It's about the same price (shell is normally cheaper than BP) and if it costs a penny more, but you get more mpg it works out cheaper!

Get the actual mpg up on the computer and you'll see soon enough what revs work best. :)

ill have to try shell but dnt think i have one near, bp closest and tesco is jus plain crap 43mpg i got with that!

thing with me is that i have no computer so cant track changes in mpg while on the road, only part way or after a tank working it out, counting fingers and stuff.lol. any other way to track it more accuratly?

Yeah its easy. Fill the car right to the top (i mean to the point of overflowing) and put the cap on. Reset the trip display and drive as normal. Next time you fill up take note of the milage you have done, then fill to the brim again.
Check the litres used and try this site http://www.robinwhite.fsnet.co.uk/conv/mpg.htm
Enter miles driven and fuel put in and it will tell you the MPG.

Thanks, will try the site, been working it out, but prob bit crude not knowing proper amount of fuel in tank etc. Was also looking for a way of tracking as a live update as am driving of engine performance. maybe VAG-COM or something, or get a new instrument with a computer!be expensive though!

Not sure if this would work, but worth contacting them to find out?

I bought a Ibiza FR yesterday and its no where near as good as my tdi sport. Its averaging about 46-48mpg. It has been superchiped though so that might affect it?
