Where Do i Stand?

Hey guys. Recently had my 1.9TDI '98 Toledo scanned. Was told by the garage that the fuel cut off valve (or stop Solenoid) was at fault. I ordered this from SEAT and have just fitted it. The car still doesn't start. It turns over but doesn't fire up. If i bridge the fault, running it off the ignition, (which the AA did for me) it works...

My question is, if a garage said it is definitely a part that was faulty and i replaced it and it didn't fix the problem, will they run another scan for free? Where do i stand with this?

The way i see it they told me it's definitely the fuel cut off valve, so i purchased a new one and it didn't fix the problem. In my eyes they have made me fork out for nothing. On top of this they gave an incorrect diagnosis. If i ring them and explain all this will they offer another scan? Do i have any legal ground with this? I probabaly don't but thought i'd ask you guys if you know...

Cheers guys. Any help is much appreciated.

I would have thought the only way you would have grounds is if you had let the garage buy the part, fit the part and then they find out it hasnt solved the problem. ;)
They gave you info, and it was up to you to act on the info...in this case you chose to buy the part and fit it....(it is evident that something else is wrong now, whether this be related to the new part being fitted or not)
how much was the part?

You could try ringing them and asking in an enquiring manner whether they could give you a free scan as the info supplied hasnt solved the problem ....i really wouldnt go down the route of pointing fingers and demanding a free scan on legal grounds because you may find they will Fk you off, and then be difficult in the future.
It is a right royal pain in the butt and inconvienience when these cars start playing up, but sometimes the garage just has you over a barrel!
maybe see if anyone on here has the software for your car is it a Mk1?:)

out there over the edge vw tech
have you got power to the stop switch when the ignition is on but not cranking and will it bump start with ignition on only if so i would say your ignition switch it worn out so when you go to start the engine it looses the connection to the stop switch so not letting fuel into the engine and thus it wont start

I don't know about bump starting the car as i havn't tried, but basically, from what i can gather, there's no power going to the fuel cut off valve. When the car broke down the AA mechanic ran a fused live feed from the valve to the ignition. Well he actually ran it from the battery but i had to keep taking the fuse out whenever i turned the car off, so a garage ran it from the ignition so i didn't have to keep taking the fuse out.

I don't know if that makes anything any clearer, but at least it shows the valve it's self isn't at fault.

Where does the cut off valve get it's power from? I'm sure it's something to do with this. If it's a wiring problem are we talking a lot of money?

Thanks for the help.

well the valve is at fault as its not operating.
they can do scan as often as you like it will show the same fault.

have you done an ecu reset?

fuel cut off valve, is this some sort of safety thing? it may need resetting?

To reset the ECU i just disconnect the battery for 24 hours, right? Will i need to charge it again afterwards?

I'll try and get a diagram for the engine bay and go from there.

Cheers for all the help.

Tried re setting the ECU but didn't work. Will have to get it looked at again by another VW specialist... Cheers for all the help though.

Just thought i'd update this topic...

The car has been to SEAT and they say the problem is with the ECU. A new one will cost £800, but they said they can re wire it for me. I've had them re wire it and now i'm selling.

Out of interest, can i get a 2nd hand ECU and fit it to the car? I know it will need re mapping or whatever to work with the car, but is it possible? Anyone selling one? Does anyone know roughly how much a 2nd hand one will cost?

I'm more than likely selling though as this is the 2nd ECU to fail. The 1st one failed at about 80k but i think the last owner must have fitted a 2nd hand one as there's no way a new ECU should only last 20k. Anyone heard of that happening?

Thanks for everyone who helped.
