i only mentioned that because that's what SEAT told me to top up my oil with as they claimed i was down 1/2ltr.
my cousin recently bought me a 4ltr bottle of 10w-40 part synthetic...is this any good for service intervals? basically the description is as follows:
Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 B3 is suitable for use in automotive diesel engines including turbocharged and intercooled engines where the manufacturer recommends ACEA A3/B3 or API CF 10W-40 oil. Approved to Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz specifications.

No idea what those numbers mean except for the bottom one.
I use castrol GTX 5w/40. It`s fully synthetic and conforms to VW 505 01 standard.
The owner`s manual says you MUST use oil that meets this standard if you have a PD engine.
I was told this by a SEAT parts guy a while ago too.

VW 505 00 is the one you want to watch out of that list, all others are different codes for oil quality. The oil basically isnt not suitable for PD engines you need 505.01
Nothing wrong however using 5w30 longlife oil in the 4 cylinder PD engines (its recommended in the 160bhp Cupra engine), its over and above the 5w40 oil specs.

As mentioned it does not matter what you use as long as it meets VW 505.01 spec and is 5W-40. The reason why you should this is, in the PD engines, the injection system uses huge cams to create the fuel pressure inside a plunger. The contact point of that cam has to tolerate enormous forces, so the lubrication is very critical. So it's not the injectors themselves that require the special oil, but the cams that drive the injectors. You may damage you engine if you use a lower spec oil.
I use the Millers stuff. I believe Dealers use Quantum PD or Castrol oils.

cool, after much searching and investigation i can see that any engine oil graded 505.01 or above is suitable for PD engines...am i correct in saying this or is 505.01 especially designed just for PD?
now what i don't understand is, if longlife oils are more suitable for longer service periods but burn quicker, why would SEAT recommend this? and the fact they mentioned "it's for performance engines" leads me to believe they do really try and shaft people (as they have tried on me recently)
all i can say is, once my warranty is up i WON'T be going back to SEAT for servicing

Cheers for the information on what oil should be used in my '54, 1.9 tdi FR.
However, I just wanted to check how regularly you need to top up the oil (I know it isn't an exact science, but as I work away and the misses never bl00dy checks it. I wanted some advice)? Do the engines burn alot of oil - she only does about 15 miles to and from work, so nothing major during the week.

It depends on car to car. My car does not use any oil at all between changes, I have topped up our 1.9TDI once, every year.
If you are concerned I would suggest check it every month or whenever you top up the washer fluid, possibly check tyre pressures at the same time.
