External sounds are extremely difficult to source from within the car, most resonate through the chassis and sound like they're coming from the wrong place. I have a rear wheel drone that sometimes sounds like it's coming from the engine bay!
If the noise increases when you turn corners at speed, then it's the front bearing opposite to the direction of turn. So a right turn noise is the left bearing. If it gets distinctly quieter going the other way, then it's also a pointer to the same bearing. A noise that doesn't change volume too much could be a rear bearing, but as they don't get loaded up as much it's difficult to judge which side. The old method of lifting the car and wobbling the wheel doesn't seem to work nowadays, the bearings are just too rigid even when they're about to fail.
A suspect CV joint can be tested by driving slowly from a standstill at full lock. A 'click click' sound is a CV joint. These can be double checked by looking at the gaiter and seeing if there is any sign of grease.
And lastly, don't forget the tyres. A worn (or cheap) tyre can cause similar symptoms to a failing bearing.
