It's a bearing in the gearbox gone. Costs about £300 to rectify. Had the same issue on my car when I bought it.

look for a thread on here how to look after your gearbox or something similar if your lucky and have an fzq gearbox you should be able to fix it for a tenner and 30 minutes of your time good luck

Sorry its the cupra r 04 plate, only just got the car don't know much abiut them

I Don't know That much About cars, Should I be taking it to a Specialist Garage or Should a normal garage recognise the problem?

Definitely get the shim done. I had 5th gear whine when decelerating for 90000 miles and it got worse the longer I left it. I put the shim in and now its silent, the gear changes feel smoother as well.

Picking the kit up on the weekend fingers crossed iv got the right gearbox for it, im getting mixed responses about weather I have or not

I would say you have the correct gearbox in your car unless the box has been changed in the past. you will soon be able to see once you pull the plstic back from the wheel arch good luck mate you will be shocked how easy it is

Update on the situation, iv noticed on way in to work that it whines in every gear just gets louder the lower the gear, it makes the noise when releasing the clutch and when coasting in gear but doesn't make the noise when accelerating or when the clutch is pressed all the way in? Does this still sound like a job for a new shim and cap?

I've heard the o2m shim works wonders. I'll be doing it to mine soon , I've already got the parts. Passenger wheel off , remove the cover, there it is. Not a big job at all

I think my car has this problem too, only noticed it the other day. Slight whining noise in 1st when coming off the throttle. My cars only done 35k miles though!

Can I see the cap without taking the wheel off? Also is this I fix most garages should know about? Or am I likely to have to explain what I need doing?

Also the clutch peddle sticks abit when I first get in my car but releases normally once the car warms up

You do need to take the wheel off, yes. It's behind a plastic shield that's held on by a few Allen bolts. Google o2m shim and watch the YouTube video. It looks very easy. Or you can pay a garage and tbh with all their tools if they charge you more than an hours labour at absolute most they're mugging you off.
