Hey.

My turbo whines quite a lot when it kicks in, sounds louder than any normal car. The power is all there (i think aanyway, I haven't driven another PD130). Kicks in at around 1800k.

Is this normal or does it make this noise prior to failing? Thank you!

Is it like a police siren? If so then yes it's on it way out, I would ask an expert for their opinion too but mine was just the same. Better get the ball rolling with getting it replaced before it blows!

Thanks for the replies.

The vnt is working as it should as ive just Mr muscle cleaned it and it's operating very smoothly.

I'll get a video up when I can, boost leak sounds like it could be the culprit however no fault codes are showing up on torque. I don't have vagcom though :(

Vagcom and log group 11 in measuring blocks would be the way to go, see how the specified and actual are and whether the boost is lagging at all. The noise could be a leak, sticky vanes or the turbo is wearing out.

I've gotten a hold of vagcom will update when I find out.

It's also worth noting that the car is due a service right now so maybe a lack of oil / old oil is making the noise as it's effecting the velocity of the turbo?

My Cupra tdi has had a whine from the turbo for quite some time now and it's still holding strong been about 30000 miles since it started still got all its power and it's not blown so I wouldn't nessasery worry your self

I'll be posting a thread on it with lots of video clips from different angles when it's done hopefully to help out others deciding because I couldn't find barely any decent vids only the golf in the multistorey car park which isn't ideal.
I'm expecting a bit of vibration as ive gone for the cheap jobby on eBay

Thanks mk4 cupra!

The reason why I make the thread is because I had a remapped and straight through exhaust focus tdci and always told my girlfriend to listen out for the turbo spooling when accelerating as she could never hear it when I could.

However when driving the other day she said she can hear it way more pronounced in this car even when it's not even been modded. It sounds almost electrically when accelerating.

If your car is equipped with a sports exhaust and de cat I'm told the "siren" like noise is normal. I've done 10 K in mine, bought second hand just over a year back. The noise has always been there and I've not had any issues until now. Pitch has changed dramatically on cold start.

I had my turbo checked for play in the bearings and shaft just after I bought the car, all fine. So I'm guessing the "siren" like noise isn't anything to worry about. If you're using a standard OEM exhaust maybe you ought to have the turbo inspected?
