Hello,

i've noticed a whirring / whining noise coming from (i think) the fron left hand side of the car but it only seems to get really bad at 95 mph (on a track of course) and yopu can feel it ever so slightly in tyhe steerign wheel but only at that speed. Below 95 it is barely audible, above 95, again barely audible. Don't think it's a wheel bearing as you don't notice it when going round corners and there is no play in the front wheel. It does it whether in 5th or 6th gear.

Any ideas?? the car is a 54 plate and has done high mileage but has been serviced religiously!!

Maybe one of your tyres mate, we get people in at work complaining of wheel bearing noises and its actually the tyres that are stepped on the inner edge causing the noise, run your hand around the tyre on the inner edge (take care or a badly worn tyre with metal cords showing, check visually first) if it feels like its up and down like a 50p coin then the tyre is stepped, can be caused by incorrect inflation, run flat, cheapy tyres, inner tyre structure breaking down, etc.... just give that a try.

could also be airbox vibrating in engine bay i had this the way 2 check is get someone to rev engine 4 u and put ur ear near air box and listen worth a try ?

I also get a lot of Road noise in my 54 Tdi Se I recently replaced the front pax side wheel bearing and this made no difference at all. I also have brand new falken 452's put on a couple of weeks back and this has not made any difference. It's kind of like a whirring sound which remains the same even when coasting in neutral. My car's done 92 k and all i can think of is that perhaps a drive shaft is wearing out or needs lubrication..

thanks very much for the replies.

The inside of the passenger tyre is ever so slightly worn as though the tracking is slightly out, but not excessively. The drivers side tyre appears fine i.e even tread right across the tyre. Would the tracking being out cause a noise?

I've had cars in the past where the tracking has been out causing uneven tyre wear (inside edge) and not had a noise. Weird how you only notice it at a certain speed as well!!

I'll take it to see if the tracking is out and perhaps swap the wheels over and go from there.

thanks

I have the same thing on my front drivers wheel , A whirring noise at speed, and if on a very smooth surface going very slow can hear a poping/banging in the front right, only very slightly though. I took it to local tyre place they inspected both front tyres and said that the driers front was slightly warped, due to inner cords breaking. Tyres are verdestein and only at 50% wear so i think i will turn up the radio and pretend not to hear it until they wear abit more..
