Windscreen judder, help please, its driving me mad!

Hiya

Im having serious issues with my front wipers at the moment, i was wondering if someone can advise something.

This may be a long thread so im aplogise in advance

Right here goes.

My wipers were slitghyl noisy in the park and upright position, as if there was grease in those places.

So i used autoglym glass cleaner, which just seemed to spread the grease all over the screen to the wipers squeeked all the time.

So then i found some 50 year old rain-x in the garage and used that, it wasnt quite good enough to clear the screen so i had to use my wipers. But the wipers just judderd like mad, and im sure its causing damage to the linkages.

Its like the wipers want to stick to the screen but when i run my hand over the screen its very smooth, not sticky.

So ive tried:

- Auto glym car glass polish
- Old rain-X
- Vinegar & newspaper
- Halfords glass cutter
- Halfords rain repellant
- Boson glass cleaner
- Windowleen
- MrMusscle glass cleaner
- Fairyliquid!

New wiperblades, even tried my wipers from my other arosa, but they judder just the same on my TDi but not on my 1.0. So its not the blades.

With numerous applications of each

And it puring down outside and they wipers are juddering so badly they are going to fly off or damage the motor im sure of it. And they are so noisey its unreal.

Please give me some suggestions on what i try next, ive about had it with it now, i dont want to go out when its raining it really is that bad!

Check the linkages that are attached to the motor, could be that they need some WD40 or that the linkages are coming away from the mechanism. My wipers were doing this a bit and I thought I had resolved the matter but, 2 weeks later the linkage snapped.

Mine did this when I first bought it, as the wiper stroked the top it would judder. I replaced the blades then I put some spray a friend gave me on the windscreen (think it was a type of anti-static spray?) solved the problem and mucho-time later its still fine?

Sounds rather strange tho I must admitt

I think it could be linkage related yeah, but the back wiper has started doing the same now so im asuming its something on my glass.

So ive tried everything, today i bought more fairy liquid and tried that but it didnt make a difference.

So since i had tried everything else i thought i need to try something greasy so they slip over the windscreen.

So i tried ................ Tyre black!!!

And it worked , mind i carnt see a thing out of the windscreen now but the wipers are working perfectly

No more juddering and they are very smooth, but its a bit hazy now so i think ill go out in the rain later and see if it gets better.

Ive just been out with the hose pipe wetting the screen and they are very good now, and the tyre black isnt washing off so hopefully it will stay put but not be as obvious.

I think i got a bit carried away and put loads of it on so its quite hazy but im hopeing it will get better

Atleast the wipers work!

I asked at a RAC windscreen place and asked if they recommend anything, they just said ask your dealer and said they carnt polish faint scratches out of windscreens .

What kind of windscreen place it that

But im happy now, ive got working wipers (but for how long!) and i got the brake fluid changed so the brakes have mproved lots

best thing to clean glass is Meths its what they use before adding graphics to windows

Try cleaning the windscreen with lemon & vinegar mixed together,then hose off to get rid of the smell.

Well i did try vinegar but not with lemon so maybe why it didnt work then.

i know but id tried just about everything else , just hope it lasts and doesnt get juddery again.

Gotta say, I think I have found a good windscreen treatment.

Been driving around for a while, and noticed that the rain was sliding off, like someone had RainX'd my windscreen...

Then I realised, I've been cleaning it with Quik Detailer, and I must remember to ask the garage what they used to clean the windscreen after they removed his sunstrip. Think the combination has acted like RainX

Somethin like meths or wite spirit will clean any residue off your windscreen and then add something like quick detailer or SRP to the surface again. Should do the trick, just make sure your not smoking at the same time

Yep, but it seems to have worked, i then polished the screen with autoglym glass cleaner and used rubber care on the blades and they are now very smooth.

Although its not rained since and its only when the screen is wet they judder, so i was out with the hose trying them lol, and they seemed ok, i just hope they will last like that though.

But now, thanks to the wonderful lime water up here, my car has gone from black to white, so i need to wash it tomorrow

Yeah, if it reoccurs then i will try meths.

Ok, i know your probably all sick of me posting about this, but please stick with me, i need help!.

Well its still juddering like crazy.

So far ive tried:

- Auto glym car glass polish
- Old rain-X

- Tyre black - Works well but its impossible to see through and it soon wears off leaving the judder again.
- Bumper cars, again, just like the tyre black.
- Meths - did nothing!
- Brake cleaner - did nothing!
- Paint restorer, followed by:
- Car polish, followed by:
- Autoglym liquid wax.

Im really and truely out of ideas now. Ive been outside for the past hour in the dark and heavy rain tying to solve it. Now im very very wet and still im no futher forward.

They are that bad that the poor wiper motor is now making crazy grinding noises, i think its putting a lot of stress on the motor.

I did think about it being play in the motor, and there is some, however my rear wiper also does exactly the same and their is no play in that, yet!

So short of either selling the car and buying one i can actually use in the rain. Or replacing the screens i really dont know what to try now.

Im thinking the screen is now too clean, its squeaky clean now. SO how do i get it diry/greasy again.

Ive tried tyre black and the likes which are greasy but they just wear off, and make a real awful mess of my paintwork.

But anything i put on will eventually wear off.

When i look at my car in the rain the water just goes to small drops of rain on the paintwork and the windows, but other cars just look fully wet, if you know what i mean. I want mine like that, i think its too clean!.

SO ill have to stop washing it for a while and park it under the tree in the garden and see if that does anything

Check the linkage ball type joints on the motors. Might be that they need replacing, failing that hun I think it might be a trip to the dealers.

Is there a different type of wiper blade you can purchase? As in different to the ones you got / had?

Might be worth a look on the net if anywhere sells like a different type of blade or something.

Like I said I had this for a while but resolved it by simply buying a wiper set from halfords?

There are aero wipers but, you will probably still get the same problem and they are pretty expensive.

I have got aftermarket aero wipers for the front and a polo aero rear wiper. Wich are all quite new. Ive also tried my old ones back on and the blades from my silver arosa, all act the same.

But i think, touch wood *touches head!*, that ive cured it!!!!!

I have clayed the windows, front and back, thourghly and its seems loads smoother to the touch.

So when it started pouring down i went out and tried them, they are far far better now and dont vibrate the arms and motor at all now.

There is still a slight judder but it seems to be getting better the more i use them.

So here is to hoping that they stay like that and dont just go back to juddering vilently.

Although ive been reading on the net about this, and it seems silicone blade are the best (ive no idea what mine are), also too much or too little arm pressure can cause it too.

SO there are a few other things i can try if it does return.

But as we speak, all is well

just had the judder problem in the last 2 weeks on me leon and seeking some knowledge. I thought it was blades so changed to the aftermarket aero blades and binned the older ones.

This morning they stopped returning to the rest position. Once I reached my destination tried them again, for them not to work. Taken the car to a auto electrician who hopefully knows what to do. Ive called my local specialist and hes comments that it will be the linkage and spindles sticking and best just to go for new replacement as opposed to repair.

Im hoping my motor isnt knackered as this will just be additional cost. My local specialist said Im looking around £40 + 1.5 hours work. Will see what I need to pay to get smooth judder free window wipers again.
You got to fix it for peace of mind as the winter comes in! Could save your life!

Well yes i had spoken to soon!

They are back to juddering vilently again.

BUT i know whats caused it.

About 2 months ago i put some very old (dated 1991!) rain-x, which i found in the garage, on my front and back windscreens.

Since then its been juddering badly.

But on friday the windscreen broke on our Caravelle, so i applied the old rain-x on the broken screen just to see if that was the problem. And its wipers started juddering badly too. Luckily it got a new screen the next day so its back to normal again now.

So atleast i know what caused it, now just to remove the old rain-x, but how

I might have to get a new screen too!
