Am I right in thinking that in Germany there is a legal requirement to swap to winter tyre for a set period in the year?
No not really. You can in theory drive on summer tyres the whole year round, but there is a requirement for winter tyres in winter conditions. What does that mean? Snow, ice, mud, and temperature. So depending on where you are and depending on how the weather is, you need winter tyres. If you are then caught out on summer tyres and have an accident or get stuck, you have a problem.

Switching to winters from October to Easter (that’s the general rule of thumb) is for sure a good idea, whether or not it’s a requirement.
