Winter tyre for Cupra 280

I've done some research and found the following details regarding winter wheel/tyre combos.

The website http://www.mrwinterwheels.co.uk/16-seat-leon-5f-steel-winter-wheels-tyres.html lists the following options for the Mk3 Leon

Centre bore = 57.1
Offset = ET48
Stud pattern = 5x112
Wheel diameter = 16”
Wheel width = 6”
205/55/16

Centre bore = 57.1
Offset = ET46
Stud pattern = 5x112
Wheel diameter = 16”
Wheel width = 6.5”
205/55/16

Centre bore = 57.1
Offset = ET40
Stud pattern = 5x112
Wheel diameter = 17”
Wheel width = 8”
225/45/17

From other posts on this forum;

Seat CS say………….
6.5Jx16 ET46 with tyres 205/55 R16
7Jx17 ET49 with tyres 225/45 R17
7.5Jx17 ET51 with tyres 225/45 R17
7,5Jx18 ET51 with tyres 225/40 R18

And specifically to an fr 184 st owner……
The only approved wheel and tyre combinations for your vehicle are the type fitted and a smaller 17 inch wheel:
7.5Jx17 ET 51, with tyre size, speed and load rating of 225/45 R17 91 W

and this was also quoted....
"as long as the wheels have normal width (6, 6.5 J) and the offset is right (ET48 or less) they will fit on the 312 mm front discs (for 1.8 TSI 180 and 2.0 TDI 184)".

I'd prefer 16's purely on cost but need to confirm fitment. Guess what we all need is a list of who has fitted what to a specific model of Mk3 Leon

I went for 18's - just put them on tonight actually... not out of choice, had a HUGE nail in my PSC2's which was rather annoying :(

I like the feel with 225 45 17, almost as good as the summers. 205 will probably be less stable.

Sent using my fingers

I went with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8's here just north of the Arctic Circle in Finland. Tyre size on my Cupra 280 in winter is 225-40-18 and they are fitted on 2009 Cupra's 18x7,5" ET51's. The tyre I mentioned is studded and are meant for use in high north winters. In fact they won both of the biggest technically oriented auto magazines winter tyre test two years in a row (before that the winner was Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7).

Grip is very, very good in snow and ice but the tyres aren't that good on wet or dry tarmac (obvious when you consider what they are designed for). Also handling on ice and in snow is very good and uneventful.

BTW they are the fastest studded tyres in the world on ice; 335kph :) tested on the Gulf of Bothnia in 2013 on an Audi RS6 tyre size was 255/35R20 97 T XL

Has anyone tried 18" wheels in the 8x18 ET 45 spec? My main concern is whether the with 8 will fit on my cupra since the originals are 7,5". the choice of 7,5" is rather limited so would like to go with 8 but dont want to rub the cars underpinnings.

The standard Cupra wheels are 8 inch not 7.5 (at least the 280 is)

You should have no problem with 8x18 ET45, I am running 8X18 ET43 with 235/40X18 winter tyres and they do not rub.

They will continue with wheelspin up to 130-140km/h.

For the last two and a half weeks the temp's here on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland have gone as low as -40°C. As I said before, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8's are brilliant on padded snow and ice as well as on loose powder snow. Hoping that they continue to perform in April-May, when the snow starts to really melt and slush comes into play.

Wondering whether my Cupra 280 is the northernmost in the world... At least I haven't seen others in Lapland, Finland. There might be few in Norrbotten in Sweden or in Finnmark, Norway...:p
