Winter tyres and tyre pressure sensor query.

Hi all,

I'm waiting on the delivery of our cupra 280 (been give a delivery date of 28th dec, fingers crossed) I'm looking at picking up a set of 18" winter rims and tyres, mainly due to the cost of 19" winter tyres and I'm sure that the horrible salty roads are going to be pretty tough on the standard polished rims.

I've read online that the leon has tyre pressure sensors, my query is what kind of warning does the leon put up on the dash and is it possible to disable it? I only ask as our other vehicle is a jeep and I had a tyre pressure sensor go down a while ago and the week it took me to get round to replacing it the constant flashing warning drove me up the wall (not possible to disable)

I did find this autoexpress review which is a good read if your looking into a set of winter tyres

Thanks

Hi,

maybe you mean TPMS (all EU cars must be delivered with this system from 2012). The system could be disabled via VCDS. You can use new wheels with new tires without TMPS. Only thing you must to do, is to "SET" tires pressure after Exchange of new wheels, and thats it.

My Leon from sep 2013 say NO warning and on summer discs/tires I have no TPMS sensors (in Slovakia sensors costs roughly 80EUR per sensor, 320EUR in my pocket ;)).

The TPS is driven off the ABS sensor, it works by measuring the wheel rotational speed. When it goes off it will bong and tell you which tyre it thinks is flat.

Its very easy to recalibrate in the menu so I personally wouldnt worry about disabling it. Ive found it quite good so far. Hasnt been wrong when it went off.

When you replace the tyres just drive off and reset it. I always try and do mine when in a straight line and at a constant speed. Although I dont think it matters.

Thanks for the reply's guys, so all I need to do is fit my new wheels (without needing to fit tps to each new wheel) then hit the "set" button and that'll zero the warning message? (Will this be permanent, or will I need VCDS to turn it off for good?)

So these are what I'm looking at getting teamed up with a set of continental ts850's. I want to keep that oem style and I think that the anthracite colour will suit my black SC nicely. Any opinions greatly accepted :D

I've always loved the style of the bbs alloys I think I've had about 5 different sets for my mk1 gti and I think I rebuilt and changed the colour on two of those sets more than once  I'd love a set of le-mans forged splits but £3000+ is a bit steep for me.

The wait is killing me for my 280 at the the mo it's only been 5wks since it was ordered, I was given a delivery date of the 28th december this week so plenty more waiting

Still plenty of time to look about for bits and pieces, feel like a kid with the argos catalog 2 months before Christmas......want one of them.....and one of them.......and......and......;)

BBS CH for me like them a lot, the le-mans is a nice wheel think it needs to be on the right car to work :)

My other car I had to wait 5 months for, it was really 9 but a few them I didn't hold the build slot but that's another story anyhow it's quite painful waiting for something that you know is going to be ace.

Glad I found a Static Demo and didn't have to wait to long well 8 days it was, just been out for quick drive about, as hadn't used it this week makes me smile it does, great little car.

Sorry OP totally OT!!

BBS CH + Conti TS850s sounds like an awesome combination! :coolthumb:

I was hoping to get a set of TS850s myself but the budget would only run to new Avons and a set of refurbed Audi wheels.

Looking good niggle, those rims look good in that dark grey. I think it'll be a toss up between the conti's and the goodyear ultra grip 8's I've been having a look around online and I've found the goodyears for £160 a corner. :)

The Contis came top in Auto Express' last Winter Tyre test. We had Toyo SnowProx S953s on our previous car (Golf Mk5) and they never let us down.

The wheels are powder coated in Anthracite. The fluoro lighting in the garage and camera flash make them look lighter and don't really do them justice. They look darker (and nicer ;)) in daylight.

Definitely all about the anthracite on winter rims...........or maybe a lime green or neon pink plasti dip, it would give the wheels a nice protective coating (I blame YouTube for giving me ideas:whistle:)

Might have a go at the wheels on the jeep as a test first though :D
