Winter tyres

Oh well, back to square one. Finally got contact from the Tyremen who said they'd cancelled the order because they ran out of tyres, but might be able to source some others, but they weren't sure. Just told them to leave it for now. Will have to try the second hand wheel route and see if I can get tyres from somewhere else. Brilliant.
 
I read somewhere that last year KwikFit sold 2000 winter tyres last year, and 50,000 so far this year. Gives some indication of the demand and why most places are out of stock.

Andrew - no need to drop to 15" wheels, 16" will be fine, even 17" on winters would be a big improvement on summers.
 
I paid 300 quid fitted for a set for mine, those were sold out within 2 weeks and nothing less than 500 pounds per set was available 2 weeks after that. Within a week, even those were sold out so i'm glad I got mine fitted early.

Lee - i probably wouldnt have gone up that last road mate :D

on the tdis they are 288mm brakes , i didnt bother upgrading in size just put better disks on

and the reason was thinking of 15s were for cheapness really ,, unless 16s are same

car will prob look lower too [B)] but might attract all the snow to attach to my car instead of driving over it :happy:

Ah right are they. I just assumed they would have the 312mm brakes as my 2000 Leon 20vt sport had them.

15's would fit then and would be cheaper but lowness isn't a good thing in snowy conditions. Mine isn't that low but rbs all the time and i think the ice may have done some damage underneath:(
 
hmm thats what im thinking , already scrapped the underneath now on speedbumps think it was the exhaust , but have also scrapped the ice when it was about ,

heard were having another flurry of snow this weekend :(
 
Whether you run 15, 16 or 17" wheels, your height won't change, as you'd use tyres to give the same overall diameter.
 
Been offered a set of Rockstone winter tyres, full set £450 fitted, which doesn't seem to bad, anyone heard of or using these tyres?

These are the only tyres I could get hold of, don't think they're great, and have a massive mark up at the moment - if you need winters then you probably have no choice...

I know that now :D

Mind you, I'd probably done over a mile and a half uphill up that road without trouble, before embedding myself in that drift !
The farmer who tugged me out with his tractor, besides (quite rightly) thinking I was an idiot, said he was amazed how far I'd got...
 
I am amazed how far some people aren't getting. I've been out this morning, there's probably a wet inch covering the roads and honestly, folk are all over the place.

I got as far as the garage and then came home - just not worth getting bashed into.

Couple of silly doughnuts on the ice on the drive and then sit down with a beer and watch traffic news :)

now that we have snow here now (about 10 inches fell on Saturday) i have been able to put the Dunlop Wintersport 3D's t the test.......WOW:-o
its amazing how much grip i have, even in deep snow!!

just a shame all the cars around me don't have them on, then i wouldn't have spent over an hour to cover 3 miles this morning:blink:......so decided to turn round and work from home today ;)
 
I got my winter tyres fitted yesterday two weeks after ordering them, although they were held up being delivered sooner due to the roads being so bad!

Haven't tried going up a snow covered hill yet, but had a play in a snow covered car park this morning. I had no issues going forward, round corners or reversing, not even a hint of slipping. I wouldn't have been able to do that with my Sesanta's on!

I can also put my foot down on a clear road with no ESP coming on. Even on a clear road going round a bend with the Sesanta's on they would slid due to the very cold temperatures and flat out in 3rd gear the ESP would kick in, but not now with the winters on. Much more confidence now.

I got a set of Nankan SV1 Winter tyres :)
 
It just shows that near enough any winter tyre, even from a budget manufacturer, will be an improvement on summer tyres. I guess the difference is that we expect our summer tyres to perform when driving enthusiastically whereas the winters are just to get us going and prevent bouncing off kerbs ;)
